Measuring LPG Levels

dear all,

We have a bullet for LPG storage ( aprpx. 16.0 mt capacity ) which is being used to supply LPG to direcct gas fired oven for baking biscuits purpose. Since Lpg contains some part of liquid and some part of vapour. We checks it's stock using rotodial gauge, which shows the percentage of liquid only.

I want to know how we should decide the actual stock of LPG ( liquid and vapour ) at that moment.

Kindly help me.

Don't quote me on exact numbers, but liquid LPG has a density around 560kg/m3 and a vapour density of around 2 kg/m3 under similar conditions.

Even though these numbers are not exact (all LPGs are slightly different) it kind of makes sense to ignore the relatively small quantity in the vapour space and use only the liquid level for the actual stock. Also in most cases only the liquid can be pumped, so the rest is not usable. Not sure how the bean counters or the tax man views this though.

LPG is stored in its liquid form a relatively low pressure 154psi at 90°. Depending on your rate of consumption this pressure can drop. As the liquid evaporates what left cools. As it cools the pressure drops. So I would stay with the liquid measure. It order to know the amount of propane in vapour form a pressure gage would need to be installed.

Pressure will drop only if heat required to vapourize liquid at the rate of withdrawal is not availalble . Pressure essentially tells you the temperature of the liquid - useless for knowing weight of propane in the tank
