Your not giving a whole lot of info here. For what application are you looking to have the pump run on, how much CFM (cubic feet per minute), what kind of foot print do you have to work with. With more info I can tell you exactly what you need and the pump that will work best in your application. If your looking for general info give me an email address and I can send you my maintenance and trouble shooting chart.

What sort of a vacuum?? What pressure do you want to get down to???

You have a range from a vacuum cleaner to a mercury vapour pump.

Second question is do you want to pull a vacuum or hold a vacuum

Third is the chamber to be large or small

Fourth - what are you pulling a vacuum over - what is its vapour pressure/boiling point (at reduced pressure).

Otherwise your question is like "how long is a piece of string"

I use vacuum pumps in several different applications. One is a simple piston type vacuum pump that is close-coupled to a 1/16 HP motor. This wouold be much like one a dentist may have in his office to operate the little tube that extracts the saliva from your mouth as he tortures you.

I also use a sliding vane type vacuum pump that is a little lerger than the one described above. It is a very useful little pump that I use to operate a vacuum priming system on a pump station.

Then there is a liquid ring type vacuum pump that I use for a vacuum sewer application. This pump uses a 10 to 20 HP motor and operates four to five hours per day.

There are other types of vacuum pumps, some getting very large and using large HP motors. These might be screw type pumps or other designs. As has been said above, you need to describe your perticular application and stand back and see what happens. You will be surprised at what you can learn at this site if you "prime" the pump first.
