ATEX 94/9 Compliant Vehicles

11/07/2006 4:59 AM

All,

I have been asked to obtain the names of suppliers/manufacturers who can customise a double cab pick-up or SUV (4x4 UK) for operations within hydrocarbon facilities with high H2S content. The facilities are located in the FSU and so European, including FSU, Middle East or Asian companies specialising in this type of work would be best for nomination.

The big bullet points I wish to tick off are as follows:

  • Compliance with ATEX 94/9 and other related/similar codes and standards
  • Tranport 4-6 personnel, including personal BA sets including spare(s), tools, equipment, replacement parts.
  • Positively pressurised cabin
  • a gas detection system
  • A contained clean air system (75 Seconds) within the cabin that would allow personnel to don BA sets
  • Air filters and dampers
  • Secure radio communications
  • Severe Environmental conditions (-40C to +40C)

I did a search and got this.

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=%22ATEX+94%2F9%22++%2Bmanufacturers+&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

and this.

after you work your way through these hits you will find references to who makes them here and there.

The reason, H2S gas, common in oil wells and gas wells (H2S in the gas makes it get called 'sour gas'). From a distance it stinks badly. close up it kills with one breath as H2S is 100 times as toxic and carbon monoxide. Even low concentrations kill the nostril cells that detect odour. So any vehicle that operates must have a gas tight cab and an air fluch shstem to allow the people inside to get into protective gear and call for help and survive for a while.
