Hardening Gear Teeth

02/27/2009 6:16 AM

I've been repair a set of Integral Gears with Shaft. The shaft operation was in Low speed but High Force. I repaired by weleding on every single teeth using Plasma Transfer Arc Welding & the Filler Mat'l is was 410. Now the result of the Hardnes is was 60 on the teeth & 43 on the shaft. My Question is : " can we increasing the hardness ?" Note : rehardineng by nitriding. Thank's.

Your teeth hardness now is already 60HRC ? that is good enough hard for a gear tooth.

Our hardened gears are 60-62 HRC (we are purchaser of them with the above spec)

However we expressedly forbid the gear teeth welding for several reasons. For gear teeth it is not only the surface gardness that matters but equally (or may be more) will be the core toughness requirement, especially in the highly stressed teeth - high torque.

The hardness value according to me is good enough. Other part no comment.
