Plastic Film - CBRN Tested

02/27/2009 8:05 AM

Where can I find flexible, clear plastic film that has been successfully tested against permeation / breakthrough of CBRN gas? Need source(s) for 7 million sq. yards annually.

Life Suit,

Dow Corp. manufactures a line of barrier films, under the name "Saranex".

These films may provide a barrier to Chemical & Biological contaminants, as well as block airborne radioactive particles; however, as I mentioned in a previous reply to you in a recent thread, you are going to be hard-pressed to find a clear plastic film (or any kind of "film" for that matter) that is going to be impermeable to Radiation.

(You can stop alpha particles with just about anything, even a sheet of paper. But you will find it much more difficult/impossible to deal with stopping higher energy "particles" that are a result of beta & gamma decay)

Saranex barrier film is often bonded to Tyvek to make one variety of fully encapsulating hazmat suits.

Alpha particles and beta / gamma decay - - that went WAY over my head!

Are you saying that "any film" will stop NBC gases (not liquids) and protect someone on the inside of the enclosure - as long as they had clean air from a CBRN filter?

I will check out Saranex. Thank you very much.
