03/01/2009 11:44 PM

Please can anyone give me a link to know more about spare parts or a literautre on spare parts which includes Philosophy behind asking spare parts & Types of spare parts (i.e. Commissioning, Capital, etc...)

I need to prepare a Presentation on "Spare Parts Philosophy and Types of Spare Parts"

I got some information from my previous posting but its not enough and I tried to search it on google also but not able to find the exact information I needed.

In your research, be sure to Google the term "just in time inventory".

The above link may help to find some comprehensive literature on spares planning and logistics. You should just keep in mind that - depending on your business - economic factors might need more consideration that in the military

Sanjay,

The links below should provide you with a starting point.

http://www.idcon.com/reliability-tips-410.htm

http://nuclear.inl.gov/fusionsafety/meetings/iea-task-5-2002/docs/d3-spare-parts.pdf

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/login.jsp?url=/iel2/599/4400/00169593.pdf?arnumber=169593

http://www.ntis.gov/search/product.aspx?ABBR=ADP002791

http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=9794&page=13

In addition, here are a few factors I use in determining my stocking policy:

1. What is the effect (economic and practical) of a forced outage?

  • In a coin laundry, failure of one washer may cause perhaps 5% loss of revenue, but only during peak periods when every machine could be used.
  • In an assembly line manufacturing plant, failure of a machine controller anywhere on the line could idle hundreds of workers, with millions of dollars in lost production.
  • In a space station, failure of orbit stabilization system might end with a 5,000 ton hunk of blazing metal crashing into a major city.

2. What parts are consumable, to be replaced during routine maintenance?

  • Lubricants
  • Wear parts (brake pads, moving seals, etc.)
  • Filters
  • Belts
  • Brushes

3. What components have the shortest MBTF (mean time between failures)? This can be determined by manufacturer's data, or by maintenance personnel experience.

4. What components may not be available for purchase during the life of the equipment? More and more manufacturer's are providing parts support for 5 years or less. If a newer version of the equipment is produced, parts for the older version may not be available, even if you're still running the machine 10-20 years later.

Hope this helps.

Sanjay, Optimum Maintenance Policy differs from industry to industry. What is ok for a batch production shop may not be valid for an Automotive Assemly line or for a chemical process system. From the past data of your shop & maintenance records, you need to work out " Service Life " for various parts. Then you may have to develop an " Optimal Maintenance Policy " to suit your Industry, based on your demand forecast taking care of 1. Regularly scheduled preventive maintenance & 2. Random failures of parts/ units. You may find more info. by Google Book Search on " Maintenance. Replacement & Reliability " by Andrew. Hope this helps you to prepare your Presentation. Rangasamy

Quality and Useful life should be on equal footing in your presentation.

The throw away society is killing us presently.
