Converting DG Sets from Diesel to LDO / Furnace Oil

03/02/2009 11:04 PM

Dear Sir,

We are interested in converting our DG Sets From Diesel fired to LDO or Furnace Oil fired. I would like to know which is the advantage one either LDO or Furnace oil. What will be the quality of power and the economics of maintaining the DG Set. Are they environment friendly. Can some one help me in tracing the suppliers who supply the conversion kits in Hyderabad or India.

Thanks and regards

Sampath Kumar D

Dear Sir,

LDO Stands for Light Diesel Oil. LDO is about Rs.1.80 Per Litre Lesser than High speed Diesel.

Thanks and regards,

You can run HSD based DG set on LDO .However due to high sedimentation from LDO in comparison to HSD ,You need to put a purifier before fuel entering engine.

For running diesel based DG set on FO ,you need conversion that is costly.(It also depends on DG capacity). Now a days it is better to convert in natural gas provided its availability or in dual fuel mode (Gas/HFO).

For conversion kit ,it is better you take help from the manufacturer of the DG set.

Depends on the make and age of the engine. Older Caterpillars can run well on furnace oil (No. 2). The pre-electronic Cummins 5.9 can run on No. 1 or 2 Diesel,. fuel oil, jet fuels, etc. Electronic engines are more fussy, and the emissions engines even more so. But older mechanical engines are fairly forgiving. Best to check with the manufacturer.

The engine design and load will determine whether or not it is reasonable to switch to a lower quality diesel fuel. Consult the engine manufacturer for advice.

Generally, heavier fuels contain more sulfur and nitrogen compounds which will contaminate the lube oil fasted. High over-based lue oil will certainly be needed. If the engine is turbo-charged, then metallurgy of the exhaust piping and expander may limit fuel sulfur content. Area air emission standards must also be connsidered before switching to lower quality fuel.

Dear Mr. Sampath,

I am also looking for a similar solution. We have a cummins engine (1MW capacity) x 3 DG sets. I have contacted cummins, but no big solution is coming forth. I am also based at Hyderabad. You may please contact me on 9010077555 for further discussions, as I also have similar requirement.

Regards,
