Silica Aerogels Without Supercritical Drying

03/03/2009 2:31 PM

I am looking for a cost efficient process of making silica aerogels avoiding the supercritical drying step. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

You answered yourself when you mentioned "Supercritical" drying step.

I meant another step less costly than supercritical drying. Perhaps freeze drying.

Hello gerdsmit,

It would be very advantageous if you briefly brought us up to speed on what you already know about the process, and why you think a different method may work. What do you know about supercritical CO2 and its role in the supercritical drying step?

The amount (and quality) of information you provide is directly proportional to the quality and specificity of the answer.

Mike

Hello.

Just one clue: look for the so-called "ambigels". The key is to exchange the fluid towards, some with very low surface tension, that will not crack the structure while evaporation.

Regards.
