Laminated Steel - Increased Strength if Used on Edge?

03/03/2009 3:43 PM

I work for a company that produces Hologram Security machines. The heart of the machine is 2x 8mm thick Steel plates.

They are 237mm wide by 200mm high and 8mm thick. Standing on their longest edge's and running horizontally across the middle of the plates is an open ended slot 165mm long. The plates clamp between them a Hydraulic ram (fixed at the open end of the slot) that act's verticaly against a Die mounted opposite the ram on the other side of the slot.

My question is, could these 8mm plates be substituted for 4x2mm plates and still retain or increase their strength? Or does Lamination only work on the `flat` face and not it's edge?

A picture would be so much better

I think I see what you mean, and I think the answer is yes, doubling up plates of half the thickness would probabbly do the job, as long as they are clamped to eachother so that the plates can't buckle inividually.
I reserve the right to be wrong here as I'm not a mech eng.

Which of the stuff was OT (was there something unmentionable in it ? or as we say un-parliamentary ?) .

But I simply don't like the idea (a bunch of sticks may be better than a single stick but it does not work well with the plates) especially the plate seem to have enough stress as support to hydraulic mechanism.

are you saying a quantity of 2pieces of 8 mm thick steel plates ? and you want to know if a quantity of 4 pieces of 2mm plates are stronger or as strong. Also do you mean by your comment that does lamination only work on the flat face and not its edge mean that you think a lamination is stronger? The answer is no it is weaker on the flat. Much so. You also must consider the states of stress, bending, shear or torsion. you seem to be indicationg bending and in that case a laminated beam if much weaker than a beam of the same thickness

Thank you Del and guests for your replys it has helped. Unfortunately as soon as I asked the question I had to go away for 2 days and was unable to reply, being away from any sort of internet access.

It is nice and reasureing to know that you guys are out there, as R & D can seem a lonely place sometimes. Again many thanks.
