What's the Best Generator?

03/04/2009 10:53 AM

I am looking to build my own standby electric generation system and would appreciate opinions on the best type of generating motors. I am looking at 12kw and 24kw and something that can run 7/24 for long periods if necessary.

Thanks Gary

riverrunner; you will need to use 2 horsepower for each kilowatt ,12 kw= 24 HP, 24 kw=50HP probably a diesel engine, if in cold climate glow plugs & tank heater if water cooled. a battery charger, unless you program it to exerciser every 2 weeks. perry

natural gas, baby! No tanks, no standing in line at power-less gas stations, comes on automatically.

Thanks guys, I should have been more specific, I am interested in the type of generator i.e. should it be an alternator, a dynamo, with brushes without brushes? the actual part I am looking for is the motor that generates the energy into electricity.

Thanks Perry

Right on the button with the type of answer, I checked out the site you mentioned and they show up to 10kw, now that I'm on the right track, I need to break it down to the best brand even if it's not the best price!

Perspective is a pisser, if I think it sucks it will and so will my day, if I think it's great it's great and so is my day, do I have to change it? or maybe change my thinking, hmmmmm

I recommend an 1800 RPM unit running natural gas if that is available at the location. These units (ONAN is on excellent manufacturer) will run continuously for a couple of years (15,000 hrs) without any service other than oil and filter changes every 1500 hours or so.

If running on gasoline, oil and filter changes will need to be every 250 hours max. Be sure and buy high quality fuel and use fuel stabilizer.

If diesel is the fuel of choice, be sure and buy the ULSD and use fuel stabilizer. Oil and filter changes under continuous operating every 250 hours may be recommended.

For stand-by and intermittent use, yearly oil changes or every 100 hours of operation are necessary.

3600 RPM units are less costly, noisier, and less durable of course.

Youre on the right track, but you should check your local suppliers and work outward from there untill you find what your looking for.

two years ago I bought a Generac that runs on natural gas. It exercises itself every seven days and I've never had a problem with it starting or not starting.

Coupled it with an automatic transfer switch and I can leave the house for work knowing my wife can watch her soap opera everyday.

Thanks a lot guys you've all been a great help, I have learnt quite a bit even to the point of having to correct my question, I used the wrong terminology I should not have been asking for a generator but as I found out through this thread an alternator. I have now opened a new thread under alternator.

Thanks for getting me there

Gary
