Windows 3.0 OS software revisited ad nauseum

03/04/2009 5:19 PM

Hello all you Guys who took an interest in my little problem,

Bondy in the UK is sending me the 3.0 OS.

Thanx to all who warned me about trying to integrate an old system in to today's faster technology. I will use the OS on an old 286 IBM clone with a huge 8meg hard drive and running at a "fast" 8.

As I told Bondy, "a newbie I might be, stupid, I ain't!" I do pay close attention when I am told something, and except for a stubborn streak that leads me astray more often than not, I do listen to those who know.

Anyway, enough preaching for today. I just want everyone to know that this newbie appreciates every bit of help he has received from this discussion group.

I'm so glad I found you!

Ken

Ha! I still have a 286 clone (Jameco) that has a "Turbo" button that rockets the CPU speed all the way from 8 to 12 MHz and it has a '287 math-coprocessor' that keeps the 256MB RAM and 40MB hard drive busy. Win 3.11 still runs on it, I was amazed the thing still booted after being curious enough after your post to dig into the bowels of my closet to actually fire the thing up. The sad thing is it actually runs Wordpad faster than Vista runs Word.

The best OS for this system was DRDOS6 but sadly MS refused (for no technical reason whatsoever) to allow Win 3.11 to run on top of it. Good luck.

Steve.

I don 't suppose you'd be willing to part with that old relic, would you?

Here I sit, broken hearted... and you know the rest of the story.

I was sad to hear that Paul Harvey died last week. There was a time when I was a truck driver (we won't go into how long ago that was!) when I could listen to him on my truck AM radio (now THAT sure as h--- dates me!) from Pennsylvgania to Florida, sometimes without a break!

As I recall, Defreetsville is near Watertown, or am I wrong? The memory is the first thing tp go!

I'm not too far away, Central Square area (Constantia/West Monroe).

Personally, I'd take Harvey over Limbaugh any day.

I'm not comfortable selling hardware I suspect will fail at any moment, old as it is, but I'd be happy to answer questions you may have re old Win versions, I cut my teeth on them. My only question is Why Win3 and not Ubuntu (which will also run on a 286?)

Cheers.

Steve,

OK, I understand.

If I run into any problems, I'll give you a shout.

Thanx anyway.

Oh, what's "Ubuntu"? I don't remember that one.

It's an alternative to Microsoft Operating Software called Linux.

It's free and very powerful and will run on almost any computer, there are hundreds of free applications for it available.

Check it out, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu

Cheers

Ubuntu is not that old, but it is a good alternative to windows. You would need to find an older version of it though, because on my current pc, I was going to install it, but it was 700mb, and then the opportunity came to have XP instead. Have a look at this: http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/ It has some of the older releases on it. Good Luck

Ahhh the days of getting excited about your new math co-processor. I was really excited about the new graphics I would get with installing my "new" VESA video card.
