IPCONFIG.EXE in Widows 2000/XP

03/05/2009 5:21 PM

Hi to all

How I can issue a command such as IPCONFIG.EXE using Windows 2000/XP.

I remember issuing commands belong to the DOS days.

Thanks

I open a command window and type "ipconfig" works fine for me.

I know a lot of ppl try to run ipconfig from the run box, and that will open the window and close it right away. Instead click start>run, type "command" into the open box and then "ipconfig" in the command window that opens and you should be fine.

Do you mean default gateway? wikipedia will do a much better job than I explaining that, but its basically the IP address that your internet traffic goes through.

Start - Run - cmd (in Vista you type cmd in the search and right click cmd and run as administrator, in order to use these commands)

in the command window type ipconfig and it will display your ip addresses

if you want to get a new ip type ipconfig /release

then type ipconfig /renew and this should give you new ip addresses

You can also flush your DNS caches by right clicking the network icon in the taskbar

and select repair.

Check out this link it is very helpful.

Thanks Guest for the valuable information.

I have a question:

How come I can change my computer IP address and it assigned for me via my INSP(Internet Service Provider)?

It depends. With my ISP my ip is dynamic so it could change every time I turn on my modem or until the lease expires and then it is automatically changed. This is helpfull for getting rid of idiots who are attacking you.

This is how my network settings are. Note: I do not have my own network setup, just a pc hooked to a modem. Go to control panel - network connections- find your network connection - right click - properties - scroll down to Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click to highlight- click the properties button. In the general tab I have Obtain an ip address automatically & Obtain DNS server address automatically ticked so the ISP gives me a new IP automatically. In the Alternate Configuration tab Automatic private IP address is ticked as well.

With that configuration I am able to force windows to give me a new IP (from my ISP) by following the instructions in my post above. If you have computers/components networked via a router they may share the same or similar IP address so you may have to Google that one because I have never set up a network just know a bit about certain things.

Steve,I checked my computer settings, it is exactly as you mentioned above but my IP address always the same - does not change.

I think that depends on my and your's ISP.

The IP address/Subnet Mask/Default Gateway for my computer are all always the same - no change

Hi Zacky,

It seems that your ISP has a static IP for you. You could call them and ask why it is not dynamic because a dynamic IP is way safer for surfing because an attacker cannot ping you if they dont know your IP after it changes.

You could also try and manually change your IP. You default gateway and subnet mask would have to stay the same though.

also note the spaces in the commands between g & /

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

If it isnt typed exactly right it will not work.
