What's the Best Alternator for This Application?

03/05/2009 7:08 PM

I am looking to build my own standby electric generation system, I would appreciate opinions on the best type of generating motors. Back across the puddle we used to call them dynamo's which I've been told are called alternators over here. I am looking at 12kw and 24kw and something that can run 7/24 for long periods if necessary. I have been told that brushless are the best what do you think? and what brand works real good?

All the best Gary.

You don't say on which side of the pond you are, nor whether you want to charge batteries or supply mains voltage (that depends on which side of the pond you are!).

I would personally suggest that you buy a complete unit if it is for mains voltage, you cannot build one for less than they cost to buy complete.......ebay is a source of secondhand ones too, even cheaper....

If you have money, buy diesel, if not, buy petrol.....

Use the exhaust heat to make water hot for washing etc..or for central heating.....

Dynamo's are different to alternators. Dynamo's produce direct current, alternators produce alternating current.
