density measurement

11/09/2006 12:52 AM

Can I have suggestions on slurry density measurement instruments that do not involve radioactive material. I am involved in cement based slurry density measurement and I need to migrate from radioactive based istruments.

density=mass/volume right....

So pass ur slurry through a vessel which could hold 1 litre of slurry measure the mass at that point..

I hope this should work...

Please check possibility using the Coriolis mass flowmeter.

Manufacturers: Emerson, Foxboro, Endress+Hauser, Krohne, etc.

I believe there are some acoustic methods available that are robust enough for aggregates. But you'd need to investigate if any of them have developed far enough for your application.

For inline slurry applications the Corioliss device is probably the best I have used. I do not understand why you need a different intrument for nonradioactive materials. The real technical problem is the fact that the material is a slurry (radioactive or not). Slurries present all kinds of problems ranging from complex rheological issues to more expected issues like deposition, abrasion and plugging.

Google for a DENSITROL unit.If still available, they take a sample of the mix continuously and provide an output, either analog or digital.May or may not be compatible with your needs but worth a try..

Try out the Mobrey densitometer from Emerson (ex Micro Motion).

I imagine the slury is flowing and is being discharged into some sort of container or a moving conveyer system. Now if it is possible to arrange for the discharge end to be a horizontal "T" rotated at constant speed by a motor------like a lawn sprinkler in reverse; then the torque required to spin the T is a good measure of the mass flow rate.
