LAN + Internet

03/08/2009 4:14 AM

Hi everyone, Soon I will have a new PC, and was wondering if it is possible to plug my wireless card into the new one, and make a LAN between the new one, and my old one, for files, but more importantly to have internet coming through the LAN. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks Bondy111

For the shared internet, how do you set it up, and does the one with the wireless card have to be turned on for the other one to have internet?

Thanks, am I right in thinking that for the computer that is getting it's internet connection from the other one, the one with the wireless card has to be turned on?

Ordinarily, the other computer does not need to be turned on for internet access. Typically, you will have a modem (cable, DSL, etc) that provides the basic internet connection. A router (in your case, you'd want a wireless one) allows sharing of that connection, and also can allow sharing of a printer connected to the other computer (but in that case, the other computer does need to be turned on -- unless the printer itself is equipped for wireless use or ethernet use). (Wireless routers, by the way, typically have a couple wired ethernet ports, too, so can be used to connect a third or fourth computer that does not have wireless capability.)

Spend some time online reading up on your operating system's version for setting this stuff up -- in some versions of Windows the help system is clear as mud, and the process is pretty tedious. In other versions, it is pretty straightforward.

your old PC will have to be equipped also with a wireless router that will "broadcast" signals to your new PC's wireless card.

the connection is quite straightforward, and today's devices are mostly plug and play, so that if they're installed properly, both PCs should be able to detect each other's presence once they're powered up.

you can then go to the control panel and open the network connection to further define the level of accessibility you would like the new PC to have. Inside the control panel, you can press F1 to find the answers/steps to do this.

Bondy,

What you talking about can be done, please see the following link for instructions from Microsoft on setting it up;

Wireless ICS link (https://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx - sorry, link no longer available)

If it were me, I'd get a cheap wired or wireless Ethernet router. They can be found for $20 or less here in the states. Without the router, your internet connected computer will need to be turned on and connected to the internet to accommodate the sharing, and, if you have hi-speed internet over a wired Ethernet connection, you will need to have two Ethernet cards in the machine that's doing the sharing, one wired for the internet connection, and one wireless, to do the wireless sharing. That's assuming your internet modem is Ethernet connected, I suppose if your modem is USB, you can get by with just the wireless card. And if you are using dial-up, you wouldn't need two Ethernet cards. If you are on dial-up, then the router idea does not apply, and the method you are proposing is probably the best you could do.

Hi Bondy111,

This thread http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/9640/sharing-internet-connection might help.

Bondy,

If you already have a router, you should not need to use one of your other PC's to share the internet. The router should provide internet connectivity to all the PC's you have, as well as file and print sharing, if it's set up that way.

I am assuming you have hi-speed internet, provided through the router. If that's not the case, this would not apply. So what is your setup?

It is a wireless router hard plugged into one pc, with mine on wireless via a wireless card, and wanting to share internet to another, over LAN.

It is high speed internet, usually about 4mbps

Bondy,

The WAG200G has a built-in 4-port switch, all you need to do is connect the other PC to one of the open Ethernet ports on the WAG. Any PC connected via the 4 wired ports, or connected wirelessly, to the router, will have internet access. Is there something about your setup I'm missing here?

Here's a picture of the rear panel of the router. If you only have one computer hooked up via Ethernet cable, you should have 3 open ports.

The port on the far left is for the telephone line, this router has a built in DSL modem. The other 4 ports are for any Ethernet device you can to connect to each other, or the internet.

Hello Bondy,

Most all new PC's don't need a wireless card to connect wirelessly to the Web. It is usually recommended to share from the newer unit down stream to older.
