short circuit rating for cables

03/08/2009 6:57 AM

IN calculating the cable runs under LT cable, should i consider Voltage drop but my doubt is should i have to consider the short circuit rating for cables.

Short circuit calculations are for overcurrent and protective relay coordination. It is generally used to prevent up steam tripping and equipment protection.

So, no you shouldn't have to worry about your short circuit rating of the cable, unless you are trying to size the overcurrent protection of that cable and its equipment down stream.

When connecting a cable to a panel there are many considerations,

1-Voltage drop

2-Maximum operating temperature ( heating limit)

3-Max short circuit that the cable can withstand in association with the uostream protection device

2 & 3 above are related to the insulation type PCV....

No noed to calculate the short circuit current calculation for LT cables ,we have to consider the following for LT cables

voltage drop(root3 x z v/a/m)

ambient temperature

Grouping factor

soil resistivity

laid condition ( ground or air)

but in case of HT cables it is necessary to design cables on the basis of shortcircuit calclualtion and accordingly select the no. of runs. based on the load current.
