How Chlorine Affects SS304 and SS316

03/10/2009 8:15 AM

Hi,

Would like to understand the ill effect of temperature, concentration of chlorine on SS304 and SS 316.

What is the level upto which stainless steel (304 and 316) can withstand without corosion?

Say if free chlorine is 3000ppm? As a concern, the stainless steel 304 tanks with coolant corroded with Brine solution containing chlorine of 3000ppm. Would SS316 withstood this corrosion?

i think you're talking about chloride cl- and not clorine gas.

regarding chloride the "safe" limit usuall is approx 200-500 ppm for SS 304 and 500 -1000 ppm for SS 316. this limits chage with temperature and design, i mean if there are crevice, if the fluid is stagnant or flowing....

regarding SCC stress corrosion by chloride the limit is the same for both SS304 and SS 316.

SS 316 is not suitable in these conditions. If there is moisture that condenses then you'll have to change material.
