Alternatives to Ceramics

03/12/2009 6:56 AM

Hi, Can anyone Guide me while selecting the ALternate Material for Ceramic.

Right Now we are using a Vacuum formed Cup (2 Step) shape product from Bio-Soluble Ceramic Fibre. The application is to withstand 1000 C temperature.

We are looking for a cheaper product, which will reduce the manufacturing cost of Vacuum Mold, also the Vendor cry while maintaining the Required Tolerances.

For which we are ready to break the parts in 2 pieces & looking for machining or by other process & alternate material which will fit our application.

Any Valuable solutions will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

What other criteria? you only state temperature.

Vacuum forming cup shape product can be easyly made using glass ceramic and not ceramics. THis is typical once I was involved in development of superconductor ceramic fiber for super conductor motor development.

There are materials which will maintian its shape and will be do able done as

1. Melt

2.Cast

3. Crystallize to make ceramics.

I have done for one application which is used at E-9 vacuum stability with continous use temperature of 900C. Since this is unique process of conventional materials and will need to be explained in depth along with the materials chemistry, equipment and process and this will not be good platform.

My email is Masyood@gmail.com and cell (617)777-5263 and you are well come to come for chat and discuss this. I am not sure what equipment you have and what you will need to do.

RVZ717 is correct, this is a classic "not enough information" question.

Can the part be conductive? What other environmental factors are there? What is the application/what does the part do? You say the part is made from biosoluble ceramic fiber. so is this part implanted? are there FDA (or equivalent from other countries) regulations that must be met? I believe that if you modify an FDA approved product you must resubmit the product for approval.
