Epoxied Armor Takes on IEDs

11/09/2006 3:58 PM

Cougar armored vehicles feature body armor that protects troops – plus axles, fuel tanks, radiators, and more – from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), land mines, and other threats. Assembly of the armor-plated steel and laminated composite panels involves the application of no sag Araldite 2015 epoxy from Huntsman Advanced Materials, as well as clamping, curing, and mechanical fasteners, says this Machine Design report.

Most IEDs are not shaped charge devices, so a force distributing armor with several compression zones separated by hard zones helps a lot in attenuating explosives like that.

Land mines are usually made to kill tanks so all they can do to protect a wheeled vehicle is to attenuate the force and sacrifice the wheel to keep the men alive.

some vehicles have shaped under carriages so that an explosion is diverted or split into two parts

Should we be discussing this in the open? Too many prying eyes in this world.

Personally I find the entire solution towards redistribution of force ingenious. Essentially the epoxy serves the functions of a vibration damper, adhesive, and partial stress buffer, it is almost like using a pillow to soften the blow from a falling rock, but in the case of IED's the hypothetical rock is more like small pellets with immense density spread out.

As far as prying eyes, let the eyes of the world watch as those that would seek to destroy and kill for selfish motives react in frustration when every measure that these people take are thwarted and their grip of terror on the world slowly slips away from their grasp due to innovative, creative intelligent minds.
