This Old Megger

03/10/2009 11:49 PM

Hi all. The photos are from a megger I have had sitting on a shelf for quite awhile. It's a Biddle Instruments MEG Type Insulation tester. It is in very good condition, and comes with cables, case, and handbook. It works quite well.

Anyway, I am in thinking of getting rid of it, and was wondering just what it would be worth. I have looked around, but really haven't been able to find a similar item to compare it too. I realize it may not be worth anything, but I was thinking someone must collect old electrical tools.

I have been reading the newsletter for a while now and people here seem to know a bit about many subjects, so if someone could point me it right right direction I'd much appreciate it.

It looks like a standard old hand-cranked Megger.

They sell on ebay for around 5 to 10 quid.

I'm afraid its nothing very special, although it does look like an early model, they are great robust little things but with today's regulations being so strict about test voltage for wiring installations, these units have gone out of favour for the more accurate digital ones....

Shame, because I like my hand-cranked Megger, it never uses batteries and its always ready for use.

I kind of thought that was the case. According to the manual its a little over 50 years old. Its funny, I offered it to the local tech school as a gift, they weren't interested. Shame nobody seems to want it. It does work well and I have to say I like it's style. Thanks for the info though

Hello from Houston, Texas --- I have one of these meggers and mine works quite well. I use it to "ping" coax lines and ignition leads. I also have the "big brother" to the unit --- this megger has an AC source and it connects to the megger unit using a short cable. I have used the hand held digital units and they are great to use in a tight space --- but you can't beat the good old days and the well built electronic test equipment Biddle Meggers -- Tek scopes and H.P. signal generators.

Hello again from Houston, Texas ---- I was raised near Rockford, Illinois -- I wonder where you and the old time megger live. I got my first "shocking experience" back as a kid when I used to ride my bike down on Blackhawk Trail to the Slick Company -- and on a Saturday jump the fence "out back" and retreive a few old coils, gears, and magneto cases along with other electronic "stuff" from the junk pile and head home ---- I found one mag that was almost complete and when I turned the shaft, I learned first hand about the moving magnet and coil of wire effect ----- I have sat behind two Slick Mag's for over 7000 hours as they have fired the plugs in the engine. Well just currious as to where you and the megger lived --- Captain Andrew ---

If you want to sell it on ebay, let me know when. I would like to buy it. Ebay will pretty much determine what it is worth if it is up for auction for about 7 days. Some people might say more, some might say less. If you want to get rid of it, then actual worth will be what you get on Ebay. We used those in the Navy and I really don't see them very often anymore.

First, thanks to everyone, but I should update this. I have found a new home for the megger. I was able to pass it down to the next generation, so hopefully it'll still be cranking in fifty more years. But thanks again for your interest.

Advertise it to the fresh water fishing community....a true red neck would come off some cash for that baby.

Just crank'em up and dip'em out.
