switcboard is simpe with socket and switches, and switch gear means switch with gear

if u ever seen high tention panel(ht )there is a motor with gear which operates(on or off) the circuit breaker.so we operate motor with switch and motor operte gear and gear operate the cicuit breaker, these component installed in same pannel.which is called swith gear panel.

I don't think gear in switchgear has anything to do with gear

As per definition, a switchboard is a assembly of panels, metering equipment, overcurrent and other protection devices to distribute the power for use within a building.

A switch gear is combination of disconnect switches and breakers used to isolate equipments usually in a substation.

A switch gear usually can carry the short circuit/ fault current repeatedly (unlike fuse, which need to be replaced/ rewired). It usually is associated with the measuring, regulating, control and protection mechanisms.

In brief switchboard is usually a distribution device where as the Switchgear is a protection device.

Ronhu,

In simpler terms the switchboard is typically where the controls are and switchgear is the stuff being controlled.
