Who is Sarah Boone

03/11/2009 11:24 PM

Sarah Boone was born in North Carolina around 1831 or 1832. I found Sarah Boone on the 1870-1900 census records. She was married to James Boone who was brick mason. She had four children and their names were William, Mary, Henrietta and Louisa. The son was a brick mason, and the three daughters were dressmaker. I am assuming that Sarah Boone invented ironing board because she made dresses on the side. I am not sure yet, but I think Sarah Boone died on October 29, 1904.

I think it important for all African-American inventors should be acknowledge for their invention, and as African-American I intend to make sure that they are well known.

Sarah Boone was one of the first African-American women to receive a United States patent. Although little is known about her life, Boone's application indicates that she lived in the vicinity of New Haven, Connecticut when she received patent 473,653 on April 26, 1892. Boone's invention, a narrow wooden platform with collapsible legs and a padded cover, was specifically designed for the fitted clothing worn during the late nineteenth century. The contours of her reversible ironing board could accommodate both sides of a shirt's sleeves in an age without dry cleaners or washing machines. Prior to Boone's invention, clothing was ironed atop a table or across a plank of wood supported by two chairs. Although Boone's device was not the first ironing board for which a U.S. patent was issued, her invention was an important labor-saving invention and a forerunner to the modern ironing board.

Don't thank. thank Moose. I just went to where he intimated and copy pasted.
