Probably not much help if placed at the power inlet (AC in).

It will damage the drive if you place it at the motor side (AC out).

Generally, you should be careful when adding capacitor banks in plants where harmonics are present (AC/DC drives...). A little capacitance is usually OK as long as you use a higher voltage rating then the line to build up the capacitor current capacity to account for the harmonics.

If the drive is frequently tripping, the capacitor bank is not likely to help. It is more likely caused overload or over voltage from regeneration. You might have a coordination problem with the mechanical breaking system. Look at the error codes for details.

Good luck.

Capacitor(s) must be on the upstream, line-side of the drive.

Mounting/connecting the capacitors to the motor leads can and in most cases will prevent the motor brake from releasing and cause the motor to continue rotating after a stop is initiated until the capacitors discharge.

This will result in crane movement "run-away" and can be catastrophic and/or fatal.
