Green Alternative to Trichloroethylene (TCE)?

03/13/2009 7:40 AM

Hi...... every body

I am looking for the alternate of TCE (TriChloroethylene) which is hazardous de-greaser. We are using it for cleaning some electrical component dipped in oil, flux and dirt or oil particles in metallic housing having very small inner dia. Please suggest me some other de-greaser which is as effective as TCE, environment friendly, economical and less hazards.

Waiting for your reply.

Thank you.

I would try Denatured Alcohol I use it to clean metal parts. May not be as effective as Trichloroethylene is for you but is not as much as a health hazard.

So far, not very green.

Search the web for citrus based cleaners. The fact is that if you really want to go green, you will have to make some sacrifices or at least process modifications. Maybe add ultrasonics into the mix along with a green cleaner.

There is no free lunch.

There is no free lunch.

I've eaten free lunch, it wasn't any good, but it was food.

Perhaps I should have said, "metaphorically speaking, there is no free lunch".

We switched to alcohol. It's not as good as TCE, but it works.

Tried to switch to TCE from Alcohol. It is not as good as whisky or vodka.

Take a look at MG Chemical 8260 Immersion super solvent. It's expensive, but it is biodegradable and has EPA and SNAP approvals. Flash point 139'F.

You have had some good answers already. But really you need to approach companies who nspecialize in such things and get theír input as well.

I would recommend a dual system with detergents/soaps and water first at high pressure, followed by drying and then either denatured alcohol or similar......

Biodiesel is a good degreaser. It can even dissolve polystyrene! It can be mixed with surfactant for better performance, and we also make a water-based emulsion of biodiesel for easy clean-up.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by enamel on the wire. Is it a flexible plastic insulation? I don't know if biodiesel will remove it or not, but let's find out. Best thing is to get a small piece of your wire, put it in a small container with biodiesel and heat it a little to see what happens. It may only soften and swell it, but could make removal easier.Make sure you have 100% biodiesel, and not the commercial 20% B-20 blend.
