PB Easynote R4622 - Laptop Turns Off

03/16/2009 2:50 AM

Hi.

I run my PB easynote R4622 without a battery, because I accidenendly let it drain down and die, but sometimes, when the laptop is on a table, without touching the power cord, it turns off. Has anyone else had a similar problem, or anyone know how to stop it doing this?

Could still be a weak connection between the power plug and the laptop, check the power plug if there is any Margin, otherwise fixate the plug and if it still happens it maybe some power saving setting?

Regards.

Check with another AC Adapter. Some loose connection in AC Adapter's out-put or input lead.

Input lead's validation can be checked by the light on adapter.

If it is glowing even your Laptop switched off the look in the output lead.

Mostly leads crack @ the ends, Entry or other end.

Have a Good day

Both the leads seem ok. The light on the adaptor and the laptop looks good. Nothing is cracked. Any ideas?

Does it stay a while that you could see rthe Battery ICON in system tray?

If yes is it a Battery icon or "on AC Power" icon?

The battery is not in, the power icon is always in the system tray. It is an AC power icon.

Check with a mulimeter for output at the plug of adapter. Keeping the multimeter connected shake the cord [Wire] from one end to the other ; preferably @ ends.

Have you not checked with a known to be good adapter?

you say:

***********

It's completely random, some days it will turn off straight after start up, others it won't

at all, and others after a completely random amount of time eg. 30 mins

***********

Then in my idea it is the Power-Input Socket.

I had once the same problem with CD-Drive, it booted sometime & suddenly no Cd-Drive.

I took it to a Tech who reworked on the Power & System Socket with Hot-Air Soldering-Equipment.

The problem was resolved.

Most suspect are both Power-Cord & Socket.

To check intermittent fault is the time-consuming operation & needs patience.

To items you SEEM TO OK need more attention.

Most of Notebooks have similar DC-Power Plugs & sockets, DC-Voltage may differ.

See the value on lable of adapter & try to get on loan from a friend and check

with a known to be good adapter. This will isolate the fault to be in Notebook

or the adapter.

The tolerance of input volage is quite large in notebooks.

Mine has the battery voltage 14.4V but output of adapter is

regulated 20V @ 3.5A.

We have long load-sheddings for more than an hour.

My battery has almost 25 minutes of back-up [degraded from 1.6 hrs].

I am using an indigenous 24V 4.5AH battery to supplement backup to aviod

disconnetion during load-sheddings & plug-in the battery when power goes.

It runs smoothly without any indication of overheating or else for last

8 months.

Regards

Tap on the laptop and near the power connection to see if the Laptop shutdown.

Is it random or always after a specific time?

You need to replace the battery in your laptop even if it is dead. Most laptops utilize the battery as a pass through to supply power (it acts as a filter and a capacitor) which limits the actual output to the required voltage and current. The reason why the laptop arbitrarily shuts down is that it is getting spikes or low voltage errors from the AC to DC power module you use. Put the battery back in the unit and order a new replacement as soon as possible.

You got a GA from me. Laptops are not designed to run without a battery. The battery serves as a UPS (uninteruptable power supply) on the laptop. It is more likely that the laptop will work well with a battery and no AC than AC and no battery (of course this is assuming that the battery is good and charged up).

It happened again this morning, turned on the wall socket, then the laptop, got to the packard bell screen, and turned off.

I have 2 batteries, one which is completely dead, and the other, has about 5 mins charge, but makes the laptop restart

Both your batteries are taxing your power supply (adapter) all the time they are in the laptop. Not a good condition. Taking the battery out, not a good condition. Solution, buy a new battery.

It can only take 1 battery. So you say, I need to buy a new battery. Why does removing the battery make a difference?

Re: PB Easynote R4622 - Laptop Turns Off

Bondy,

Most laptops will default shut down if the battery is less than 10-12%. If your one good battery has only 5 minutes charge available the peak drain of start-up will reduce the available power to less than the minimum allowed before default shut down to preserve your data. At less than 8% there is no guarantee your data will survive intact, in other words it may rendered unreadable and lost.

Possible battery cures:

1. remove from laptop and place in ziplok bag

2. Place bagged battery in freezer for about 15hrs

3. Remove bagged battery and towel dry

4. 3-4 charge cycles allowing full discharges

Hello Bondy,

I'm with "mleiwig" on this, even if the laptop permits operation with battery removed you may encounter this issue due to dirty electricity etc..

Replace the battery or a UPS may be less expensive and correct the issue.

Re: PB Easynote R4622 - Laptop Turns Off

03/17/2009 2:38 PM

If your laptop battery is left in the machine and it is bad, it (battery) may be pulling more current than your AC power supply is capable of supplying. The type of battery fault dictates the amount of charging current that will be required at any one time and can be affected by room temperature, vibration, ventilation, and internal fault conditions. Many Laptop AC power supplies are designed to only provide enough current to facilitate machine operation and normal, low-current for battery charging. Any additional loading placed upon the AC power supply outside of design will be additive and can cause the machine to shutdown.

If your battery is not resident in the machine, check your BIOS Power Save settings and adjust as/if needed. (Usually this setting will affect the machine on a consistent timed interval and is not intermittent)

Improper cooling fan operation and/or other internal component (hard drive, CPU heatsink, etc) failure can also cause high temperture shutdown of the machine.

Hope this helps.

The battery is not in the machine The bios is not set to turn off the laptop if it reaches a certain temperature

the BIOS would be where the Power Save options are set. Critical temperature is usually a hardwired, temperature sensing device directly mounted on the motherboard and/or the CPU heatsink.

Not knowing which OS you are running: If you have access to Administrative Tools and the Event Viewer, it is possible that the cause of the shutdown will be recorded in one of the available records. It is worth a peek.

Did you try what mleiwig said i think he is correct.

If the old Battery doesn't have a short then put it back in and see if the problem still happens unless the battery exploded before.

mleiwig Ga!

Re: PB Easynote R4622 - Laptop Turns Off

From what I have read here, both batteries that Bondy has are no good. He could try the freezer fix and 3 full cycles trick but this is not something I would recommend other than a possible stop gap until a new battery can be purchased. I also would not recommend leaving one of the bad batteries in the computer and trying to operate it as this may cause his power supply to go bad or cause other problems with his battery charging circuitry. Bondy evidently just wants his computer to work without a good battery in place and I don't think this is going to happen because of previously explained problems with this solution. There are all kinds of things that we may be able to recommend to try to make this work (build a capacitor circuit to take the place of the battery comes to mind) but ultimately they will probably all cost more than a new battery (not to mention dangers involved) and may not even solve the problem of the computer shutting off. Bottom line: Bondy needs a new battery. There may be other problems with his power supply or connections or dirty supply voltage but the new battery will solve his problem.

Re: PB Easynote R4622 - Laptop Turns Off

Not necessarily. I had this trouble awhile ago with a old (9yrs) Toshiba satellite. The battery was never worth a wit and I aways used the A/C.

At some point the pooter would shutdown unexpectedly. I tried everything I could think of, replaced the A/C power supply, the cords and then a buddy let me use his known to be good battery. That's when it came clear because it didn't change a thing the laptop still shutdown.

Only when I disabled and then deleted the Power-Manager, then reinstalled via the startup/recover ensemble discs.

I stand corrected. There is nothing you can be absolutely sure of until it is tried. Bondy may need a known good battery then to determine if this is indeed the problem on his computer as well. Or, maybe he could try your fix to see if that takes care of his shut down problem. Personally, I can not imagine not having a good battery in my laptop, if for UPS purposes if nothing else.
