iMac Fails to Detect USB Drive

03/16/2009 8:52 AM

My mother has a classic blue IMac running OS9. Not enough RAM to upgrade to OSX.

If I plug in my card reader it reads CF cards perfectly - a new drive appears on the desktop and I can open, edit and copy files from there.
But if I put in an SD card the computer does not recognise that the reader exists. Nothing happens at the computer at all.

I know the reader detects the SD card, as its busy light comes on when the card goes in.

The reader will only work from the USB on the side of the monitor - it complains about excessive power consumption if you use the keyboard mounted socket.

Any suggestions?

Starts with "I" and ends with an "L"

I haven't got a clue what you are referring to!

Please explain.

Hello JayGeeBSE,

On some iMAC platforms specific steps need be observed for installing hardware and safe removal.

There is something about the SD card, I don't know what exactly but I have the same problem with the built in card reader on my laptop. I just use the camera that my SD card fits in and connect it to the USB port with the supplied USB cable then my computer sees it just fine.

I must have been having a stupid day when I failed to try direct USB to the camera. In my defence I will say the camera is mounted on a model aircraft, so it would take a little effort to remove it or get the plane close enough to the Mac. I'll try it next weekend.

Thanks.
