MPG Database

06/01/2005 4:42 PM

If auto economy is important to you and are the type who mentally calculates your mpg at every fill-up, here's an interesting site - www.fueleconomy.gov. You can set up a "garage" with your vehicles and submit mpg data to a shared database of "real world" mpg ratings. There's also a section to check other's real experiences.

This site provides a nice alternative to the EPA ratings listed on the window sticker.

Tracking MPG

06/02/2005 8:18 AM

My wife tracks her gas mileage religiously. We tend to drive her car more often just because it tends to get @7mpg more than my car. It adds up with gas prices getting so high.

Disappointed

06/02/2005 9:08 AM

Wow, MPG rates for all cars are lower than I thought. I think I'm still stuck in the 70s and 80s when car commercial advertised their MPG rates - and were proudly stated if in the 30-40 range. I can't remember a recent commercial where the MPG is shown. Guess our priorities have changed since the last fuel crunch.

Wait 2 years until we get into the next marketing cycle. US brands GM and Ford are getting hammered recently because their high margin SUV's and trucks aren't selling as well. Per an item on the news last night, FoMo and the General are close to double digit down while Toyota is double digit up, buoyed by the Prius.

It looks like we will soon be able to by the Smart Car here. There is a company that is retrofitting them to meet American safety standards. Want impressive gas mileage, they get 60 MPG. Of course if you want to carry more than your spouse and a backpack you might find it cramped. The Smart Coupe has a lot more room, but it drops the MPG.
