DOL starter for 75kw Chiller compressor

03/17/2009 9:08 PM

Dear All electrical specialist,

One of my client has requested me to install DOL starter for his chiller compressor 75kw 380v 3phase 60Hz. His main power supply is from 1000 Kva 380V 3ph 60Hz diesel generator, which is already at 600 Ampere loaded.

Can i install DOL starter for this 75kw Chiller ?

Thank you and Best Regards

Yes. If you perform your power calculations to find the generator current and compressor current you will find that there is enough generator capacity in reserve (even taking into account an estimate for the high inrush current DOL starting of a compressor motor).

Do you know what the DOL starting current of the compressor is?

Thank you very much Jack of all trades,DOL starting current is x7 of the compressor full load current, in my case is 130A. ; 130A x7 = 910 Ampere.

This is a little high to be trying to start off the same loaded generator. As others have suggested, you will need to either use a soft start circuit or start the compressor first before loading up the generator.

dear,

DOL starting current of the compressor is 8- 10 times * rated motor current.= 1340 Amp

DOL starting will draw a heavy current 3 to 6 times its normal current and for 3 to 15 seconds in unloaded that is on suction stroke but if it is on compression stroke it will take more time to start and in that case voltage wiil be low for other equipments. For rotary compressors if you have suction side vane control u can use a DOL but still not good.

Suggested methods without knowing load details are

Yes u can unstall a DOL starter wiyh soft start method ,slow increasing voltage, constant frq. for rotary OR one with V/f constant rise starter vary volt and prop freq for reciprocating OR a dynodrive. for unloaded unit/bypassed unit

If your chiller compressor is having a bypass solenoid valve bet suction and delivery that can be opened for 10 seconds by a timer.

Try this and for equipment details and order undersigned can help as a consultant or supplier on charge basis.

dear,

with longer perception, even if it is possible to start the motor DOL with the existing 1000kva dg, it is not advisable to permanently do the same, as

1. chances of alternator winding burning during stalled motor conditions. even though the breaker / mccb may have been provided.

2. higher curremt transients on the supply system - increasing Demand with rise in demand charges.

3. Life of mechanical equipment goes on reducing due to higher starting torque jerks.

SUGGESTED....

1. HAVE AUTO TRANSFORMER WITH DOL.... AFTER 6-9 SEC. GOES TO MAINS LINE & AUTO TRANSFORMER IS BY PASSED.

2. HAVE VFD .... REDUCES MONTHLY KWH BILLING BY ATLEAST 8 % AS THE CHIILER LOAD IS A CYCLIC LOAD. RUNS EQUIPMENT AT PF>0.93, REDUCING DEMAND AS WELL AS DEMAND BILLING.

REGARDS

3. Install a soft-start.

4. remove 600A load

5. install star/delta starter

Apart from the starting KVA the acceleration time is very important whcih depends upon the inertia of the rotating systems.Longer the time duration of starting current will last longer (though it will be drooping)The voltage drop due DOL starting has to be determined as motors are designed to accelerate at 80% rated voltage .The TVD of the generator with preseent loasd will indicate this. The compressor does it start and run continuously or will have frequent starts and stops .These are additional points to bear in mind in addition what has been said in other posts.
