ASME B16.47 Series A and Series B Flanges

03/18/2009 5:51 AM

Dear Friends,

Can anybody suggest me when to use ASME B16.47 Series A flanges and ASME B16.47 Series B flanges in particular? Apart from dimensions what are the other factors that bifurcates these two type?

Hello there,

ASME B16.47 Series flanges are the standard flanges for sizes above 24". As you rightly quoted that difference between Series A and Series B flanges is majorly in dimentions. Actually,if you look, Series B flanges are Thin and so lighter in weight and now are day they are used more.

On your question, what to select among the two is client requirement. Many clients mention the same in their 'Project Speifications'. Some Process Plants that are very old, used Series A flanges, and so the such plants, to maintain same type of inventory still like to continue using Series A flanges.

In my experience, I have never seen a modern plant being constructed with Series A flanges.

Hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to ask if any query..

Dear Sir,

Please let me clear that ASME 16.47 gives flange dimentions and nothing other than it. The cryogenic service requires consideration in use of Material for such low temperatures.

So there is no prolem in using 16.47 flanges in cryo services. BUT PLEASE CARE OF THE MATERIAL THAT IS USED.... TO MAKE FLANGES..
