Need Help

The current in a river moves at a speed of 2 km/h. A boat travels 30 km upriver and 30 km downriver in a total time of 8 hours. What is the speed of the boat in still water?

This looks like a homework problem...

Intuition tells me that if the boat travels equal distances in each direction the current in the river cancels out.

60km/8hrs = 7.5km/hr

But.... we are not here to solve your homework for you, so i could be providing you with an incorrect answer. you might try seeking some help from classmates, tutors, your instructor etc. It's good to know how you found the answer, and are able to duplicate the work at will.

Nobody here will give you the answer but:

Think of it this way, you can run 1 km/h on a treadmill that is doing 1 km/h. How fast are you moving forward? The speed you are running forward minus the speed that the treadmill is moving underneath you is the speed you are moving forward.

This problem breaks down into:

1. The speed the boat goes against the current (times the 30 km). Write the equation.

2. The speed the boat goes with the current (times the 30 km). Write the equation.

3. The addition of the 2 equations.

4. Solve that equation. Don't forget your units.

5. Double check yourself!!!!! Plug that back into the equations you got in 1,2,3 and make sure.
