Thickness Measurement of Powder Coating

03/20/2009 5:09 AM

Hi,

Need your assistance on the below:

We're using steel laminated core [for our transformer] coated with powder, here i wish to measure the thickness of coating of the powder deposited...Is any unit avail in market to measure it...

There are any number of instruments available.

Search for Digital Painting thickness measurement or Coating thickness measurement.

BTW: our experience was better with one UK made instrument (I have to search out the name currently out of the concerned dept) and not good with the Asian make (china one and japan one - Errors high, low repeatability, quick break down and scrapped)

If I am not wrong the instrument was called elcometer (spelling etc check up , may google) this has given a good performance.

Also some instruments are available from Fischer instruments. They too are excellent, check. The costs may be high but if it is longterm use, these are worth it form the angle of Quality (my parent deptt)

Also check the type of instruments- there are capacitive, inductive etc. Go to respective websites and check up with your requirements.

Conductive media , non conductive media etc.

We have (not me my earlier deptt ) for checking paints etc as well as for checking chrome plating and other coatings. These were compatible to any metal base (Steel, SS, Aluminium etc)

You put on a preferably ground test piece. Make Zero, Put standard thickness gauges (our one had 0.05, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.76 ) and check the calibration status. Set the instrument. Check back the zero and then measure accordingly.

Select the test piece nearest to the expected thickness (eg if you expect 300 micron thickness , select the 0.2 or 0.5 test piece)

The procedures will be anyway available in the manual.

What's wrong with a pair of calipers?

I do not know how accurate your requirements is but you can measure it before you coat and remeasure the same point after coat, with the different now you can tell the coating thickness.

In the market, there are Gauges to check this thickness, it is call Film Thickness Tester, please refer to this website: http://www.elcometer.com/international index pages/international/product pages - English/section index/dry film_digital.htm

Hope above mentioned will be a help to you.

Yes agreed with you, a pair of Calipers can help to measure the Coating Thickness but it still depend on the Spec Call from the print.

As somebody said , in paints and coatings often we work in tems of tens of microns. And that too has its own tolerances.

These can not be met by the caliper accuracies.

In fact for paintings, it is necessary along with other tests to measure the wft along with dft (wet film thickness and dry film thickness). and their scatter over the area. Since our components are quite large, some times we have to take many points in our checking and the min, max and averages are all specified in our process standards

The other tests that are mandatorily include surface inspection and preparation tests , checking for SA grade, peel off tests, holiday tests etc. Anyway these are off topic.

Only here the point is the insufficiency of caliper measurements for these. And also the digital instruments are much more user freindly.

I concede that calipers are not as accurate as other measuring systems.

Nothing but the need to "mark" previously the coordinates of the point (any direct mark surely gets covered by the coating). Any plate even "calibrated" ones have small differences, so the best practical solution is to use a magnetic device (it's for a transformer core) that can be readily checked against calibrated films (they come with the device) and I think to remember as SB that Elcometer is a trademark of such devices. Of course any coating measurement device based on eddy currents are well suited too, but a little expensive than magnetic ones.

Kind regards.

Factory Finish priming companies have a tool that measures the thickness of primer or paint as wood comes off the spray line. It's similar to a depth gauge that measure wet paint in milimeters.

Try a paint store or call the manufacturer of a major brand of paint or primer. Olympic paint by PPG would probably help you.

Good Luck.

Hi

You can use Induction meter pt Profilometer to measure the thickness of coating.

with Induction meter you can mesure dry thickness but profilometer can measure both dry and wep coating.

I suggest to used Profilometer becouse it is acdceurate.

Try the gage made by UK firm called Oxford Instruments. It is the model CMI233 with SMP-2 probe. This will allow you to measure the powder coat on the sides of the laminations as well as on flat surfaces. Gage will cost about $1.5K USD, but it is worth it. Website is www.oxford-instruments.com

Good luck,

Chris

Insurance companies use a very simple magnetic hand held device to measure paint thickness.Used to determine if proper number of primer layers and paint have been applied to body parts.Don't recall the brand though.Check with an automotive claims adjuster.

As you have a porous and irregular surface you will find a mean result. Although is destrutive but this can help you. Try to use a metalografic microscope. You will see the thickness variation in each part of lamination and can measure it using a scale.
