Win XP Pro Disk

03/20/2009 1:50 PM

Hi,

I have a copy of a Win XP Pro disk, that was borrowed from my workplace, to install on the desktop I do my work on, and was wanting to make a copy of the copy, for when I muck it up, but when I went to copy the disk, it comes up saying "cannot copy USMTDEF (pop-up is also on other files): cannot read from the source file or disk"

How can I copy these files?

I am copying them on windows xp media center edition

Thanks

What you actually want to do is create an ISO Image.

So the first thing you need to do is get your hands on some software that supports. I use MAGIC which has a separate ISO module.

Standard file copy functions won't do, as you noticed. Some diskburn software supports, some doesn't.

Bondy,

Get something to eat with the alcohol and when you wake up consider the penalties of software piracy.

If you own the software and it is a legal issue it would not be unethical to copy it for your personal uses.

Two pints, what you are attempting to do is illegal in most countries, you should not be asking for such advice on CR4, you could get banned.....

Microsoft will recognise that the copy is illegal and will take action against you.....so you must never go online, ever.....updates, forget it! You will need other illegal software just to keep it working .......

Also, the (already copied) disk you have is badly made and your copy machine has trouble reading it. Give up.

It looks as though (rough) justice has caught up with you.....and saved you from a legal argument with Bill Gates.....that could be VERY expensive!

Legality of Your procedure aside, simplest way is to make another copy like You made first one, provided You are sure this copy works ok......

Usually, software is protected in severall ways exactly againest doing what You do, up to point where some were making laser holes in media that cannot be copied.

I would say that You did not copy originall CD 100% indentically, and therefore now it is not possible to copy it from copy like You want to do. I as programmer would say it is made intentionally this way, so copy can be made only from originall CD which guarantee that at least this one was paid for and it is lawfull owner that is making copy to save originall CD from accidental damage.

Well, what you want is actually not illegal, as they think. In Windows, when you want to copy any kind of program, if you make a dvd disc, then the speed of that disc must be able 32X, or good quality, the 16X speed won´t work. You can only burn it on low speed, like 2X or 6X whatever, but low.Use a trial "Nero Burning Rom"http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_applications/nero.cfm

For Xp you don´t need any dvd, but if that program is on a dvd, then it´s an iso, if on a cd rom, you simply copy and past the files in windows, to the table. In the Internet Explorer>Tools>Advanced>"Allow active content to run in files on my computer" and the "Allow active content to run on Cd´s on my computer"Allow active content to run even the signature is invalid" must all be marked, then restart the computer. Also allow nero to run in the firewall as well.Controll panel>Security>Firewall. If you still have questions, then send me a line: attila2007@tele2.se Good luck!

??????????????

Sorry, I could not make 1 oz. of sense in any of what you wrote.....

Did you write it just to amuse us? If so, you did a great job, I thank you kindly.....

If not, re-read when sober!!! or stop taking the pills!!!! You got hold of the wrong ones when you wrote that.....

Attila, what I am writing here below may not make you happy, but it is correct and only designed to assist you!! Read and understand please.

Remember:-

INSTALLING/USING ANY WINDOWS WITHOUT A FULLY PAID FOR LICENSE IS ILLEGAL, except in mainland China where they seeming do not care......

WinXP & as far as I am aware, Vista too, have special schemes to check legality when installing and will not run for very long without going online and letting MS verify the install.....

Installing even a legal copy too often (according to Bill Gates) will get you into trouble with MS.....

Using software to "fool" XP into running still means that you cannot get updates....and you are open to attacks from various viruses lurking around on the web.....

With regard to copying, as far as I am aware, MS has never put copy protection on any of its product (I have never used Vista) CDs. At least none on Win95, 98SE, Win2K and WinXP Por. (I installed Win3.1 from Floppies not CDs)

Over the years I have copied many of them to use as a backup only for myself from an original that was legally bought and paid for. I always install from the copy to prevent damage to the original and to test that the copy is 100% in order....MS may not like that, but at least its legal here in Germany.....

Copying a CD or DVD is easy, ISO or not ISO, from or to. Remember that copying films or music is illegal in most countries, especially where copy protection is circumvented, otherwise usually legal.

With regard to music, there is so much internet radio with MP3 files to legally copy, there is no need to rip a CD!

Extracting individual files from am ISO image is easy, if you know how. There is plenty of software to do just that free or not.

DVD or CD Speed has NOTHING to do with the problem at all......Quality of the empty disk and the Drive used is another matter and verification is always required.......many people do not use verification and that is where they get tripped up!!! All good copy software has it somewhere......

I hope this helps you in someway to understand the legal side and the possible problems, but if I can help more, just ask.....

Stay cool, regards, Andy G.

Re: Win XP Pro Disk

I understand your worries.. Well, I´m an IT Professional ,Developer, making Windows Vista Ultimate, and real soon from Windows Seven, a new Operative System. What you don´t understand is very simple. What discburning has to with Windows is only that you can not burn programs unless you have a dvd disc which can take a speed of 32 times. When you buy the empty dvd, check it, and you can read 16X speed on it. Those discs are cheap, but out of maybe hundred, you will succeed with 1 or two when burning just about anything on them. Why? Because in Windows you can burn programs on any speed you want, but the latest dvd players are all designed the way that you must have a disc with the speed which capable 32X or higher, or else Windows will simply not allow you to copy anything on that disc illegal or not, doesnt matter what that stuff is.The other thing is, is when the disc is touched by hand, then the fat from your fingers is on the dvd, and the player can not read from the disc, though you have to wash that disc and get rid of the fat from it, try to run it a few times again, and it will work like a dream. If you have a copy of an Operative System is legal to have and to use. Illegal to sell, or to show in public. The copy is maybe genunie, but a product key you must have to activate that as legal and genuine. What you do is that you buy a key for that copy, or get it from another copy which wasnt used before. or the company where he work with that programm do have their own OEM activation number which is the key and very legal to use, so please dont tell him that what he is doing is illegal, if you are not 100% what you are talking about. But your comment was fun to read!

Re: Win XP Pro Disk

I hate to say this, (I understand English is not your primary language even though you are shy of giving your exact location), but at least 50% of what you wrote is maybe true for your own PC setup, but is not generally correct for any other pc in the world and could easily mislead many with little knowledge....you seem to have been mislead by your hardware software setup into thinking that it is a general problem I feel.....

When a good copy program is doing its job, Windows is a long way away from being involved......

It just struck me, perhaps you use Windows for copying, then it might well be fully true....personally never done that.....I can well imagine that MS have some nasty little bits with regard to copying their OS......why not? I would if I was Bill Gates!!

I use to have or still have in use the following programs with none of the problems you describe ever on probably 7 Laptops and 6 or 7 PCs in use/used since the mid 80s (older bit copiers I have completely forgotten the names of them, sorry):-

Nero 5, 6, 7 and 8. (All copy windows with no problems)

Clone CD 3, 4 and 5. (All copy windows with no problems) This is what I generally use.

Clone DVD. Never needed to copy a Windows DVD, but it is what I would use if that was the case.....

Ashampoo Burn software, but I do not remember the version. (copied windows with no problems)

Ashampoo MP3 Audio Center.

Several free DVD/CD burner softwares that I do not remember all the names of now, but Burn4Free was a good one that I put on the Laptops of both my daughters....it works just fine in all respects....

By the way, other than possibly Vista which I do not use (or Win7) because either it has well known problems (Vista), or is not released in a final version (Win7) for just yet, none of the previous Windows OS "needed" to be on a DVD anyway......

The OSs that I have used were on 1 or more CDs (forgetting versions on multiple floppies for the moment!), depending on language and other options....... mainly you had the complete OS install on a single CD......

I did not bother mentioning the product key as this is well known and understood by most people, he did not realize that what he was doing (company OS on a private PC) was illegal and he has refrained from doing it....good for him.

Your definition of legal/illegal is not complete, maybe its because of the country you are in does not care quite so much, but people in the UK and most of the Westernized countries must be VERY careful in what they do.....he came from the UK.

I think for someone who professes to be a computer professional, you do not make your points very accurately, nor is your knowledge as encompassing as you profess.... sorry for that. I have been retired some years and still understand some points far better.....

So before starting to throw stones at my knowledge, you should update yours at least to a usable level......maybe its a language problem......or something similar......

I wish you a pleasant day. You amused me too, I thank you kindly for that, we all need something to laugh at from day to day......

Re: Win XP Pro Disk

03/22/2009 12:06 PM

You are correct. Yes in The latest Vista we made many modifications. Mostly because of all the new technologies today in hardware and software has been changed in the lost two years so drastically and also almost everything else on Internet, like servers, all updates and so on...When we like to build a simple pc computer today, we must know exactly for sure, that all the hardwares we choosen to build that computer will work in harmony, before we build it. When have built it, then we also must have an Operative System which is designed to run that system as trouble free and reliable as possible, much faster and confortable. The word "Vista" is a little missleading word, though it´s the same Windows as any other Windows, only in a Nicer package and look. I do have time to start work on "Windows Seven" and not in a hurry, but we will fix many issues as promised, with similar problems that you have described, as soon as possible. Today if you are thinking to run Windows online, should have a minimum 4GB ram memory to be able to use it, and at least a Dual Core Processor or better.

All these, just and only because of the speed and the 3d environments in so many new programs, and because of too much informations at the same time from internet, the incoming streams, plus all kinds of attacts which can slow down your system, and it takes awful long time to found if your system do not have enough memory. Sure Vista is also made in UK ( we say that) and in English, simply because Windows is in English and so are all other programms designed to be used in Windows, or else the Operative System won´t be able to understand program languages if we use a Chines program for example, we have to translate that to english. Windows XP is too old and too slow, and not you, not Bill Gates, but nobody can make programm work today, and that´s why we have to make a much more simple and easy to use Operative System, which will be able to function together with all other new sofwares and hardwares as well. If we build up XP today again to make it functional, we must have to make 2 dvd´s huge as over 7GB, is a stupid idea.I am not talking about product keys, is because I do not need any, and not involved in that stuff too much, but you can download Windows Seven and test it for free until August this year, with a valid key. If the resellers are asking for too much for a key in your country is possible. The new Windows is not yet made, and we don´t have any "Final Version" yet on the market. That is USA Microsoft is not selling it, until it´s done and fully functional.

The prises on hardware will go down this year, so you can build a new pc, no problem. But before you build it, make a designe to fit the system, and then that system will fit all your needs. Yes, this means also, that you simply can not use a computer online, if you do not have the right software and the hardware to run it, and can not use new hardware with in new in combinations with old hardwares, though new hardware are all designed to function only in the latest system, or else the entire system won´t work. The version of the Ultimate Vista from the year 2006 for example is useless, and if I found a new one in the trash today, I would put it back there, and never even think about upgrading my system with that dvd, because I know that disc will make me only problems. Same goes to XP. That´s why we have the so called: "Service Pack 2", but unfortunatelly it´s a little annoying to build up 6001 made in 2006 to upgrade to service pack2, better to make a new, and change the entire system, and make that simple, and get get rid of all the old updates and every single old files which causes the system to crash so often. I know exactly what you think now, and it´s good to hear that programmers likes XP soo much, but understand the very simple fact, that Vista or Windows 7 or XP or however you call it, is the very same programm, developed for you, so that you can have fun with it.

Sure that Windows Defender is not at all a funny robot, and making the life of the programmers a little boring, but ask Bill Gates about that wonderful tool, tough Vista is made in US, you know (Mine is not hihihi!) I am International, but working private, and not for any Company, and do not care about Windows too much to be honest, I am not getting a penny for what I do actually. The systems I´m working on, are designed for programmers, and also for humans of all kind even if they do not understand anything about it, to be able to use it trouble free in the future is the idea.I am also thinking to make an Operative System to be Artificial Intelligence, but must fix the issues with the neurons, and found a way to make that AI "think" not only by using mathematical equations but phisical brain also made of nodes, then the system would be able to use computer vision, after that the AI could be teach to understand the system and learn it, later on would be able to Operate it as well on it´s own... Might sound stupid, but I believe it will work.

Ok, see you and have fun!

Re: Win XP Pro Disk

I´ll give you one more clue, why a copy of a copy could go wrong. The main reason is, when we make a copy from an "original" then we have a copy where have sum informations losted,or the quality more poor then the original, and if make a copy from that second copy, then from the second copy we make 3rd copy, the lost we have will be too huge, and the images are almost unreadable on the the 3rd disc, but when we make a copy from the very first Quality disc, or jpg file, photography or no matter... any programm, is the same. informations will be losted even though, but it´s always best to make a copy from the file we have as original, and should never make copy from copy. I mean for example when you make a skin in Fireworks or Photoshop, and you make too many copies of a file, and you compare that one with the original quality file, you will understand exactly why it happenz, then you will understand also, that the very same thing will happen when you make a copy from another copy, no matter what kind MP3 or dvd, or any document. When we are looking for solutions, if we found a wrong answer on the question, can result lost of our savings from the pocket, and we also waste valuable time when figuring out these things, like when we buy lot´s of empty dvd´s, the we don´t know why have to trash them and buy new a week later. So this copy stuff is a little complicated, but not impossible to understand I think...( I have nothing to with Bill Gates) Ok, have fun with the experimenting!

Re: Win XP Pro Disk

If recordings were made in an analog manner, what you say would be true.

But they are not, they are made digitally and provided the source disk is clean and relatively undamaged (allowing ALL the data to be read fully), the CD or DVD drive that is reading that disk is working correctly, the full and complete data will be read.

A good program will also know when data is unreadable and stop the copy with a message to that effect.

Then provided the CD or DVD burner is also in good working order, that the CD/DVD disk is compatible to the burner (tests have shown that some are more compatible than others with particular Burners), then a copy will be made that is identical to the original. Though it is "Burnt blind"!! Never forget this small but very important point!!

Switching on verification in the burn program allows the program to re-read what it wrote, comparing it to the original CD/DVD and this will flag any errors if the copy is not exact and correct. This should ALWAYS be switched on, but many forget!!

Further copies can be made from that copy that will also be identical.....all other points being equal....

There have been digital copy protection systems with holes burnt in floppies by a laser, whether or not such a system exists with CDs and DVDs I cannot say 100%, but as far as I am aware, they do not exist.

Such "damaged" data carriers can make it difficult to make a "working" copy, though in my experience, even this can be simulated by good copy/burning software, so that the programs still work as a copy......

To sum up, digital copying produces copies that are identical to the original (legal or not!).

Analog copying of Music Cassettes progressively get worse for each copy made from the previous copy......which is why the music industry did not care in the cassette days and why they care a lot now in the digital age.....Digital copies are fantastically good, as good as the original.

With regard to audio CDs, there is basically no way to make a CD un-copyable, many have tried, but none have really succeeded. Which is probably why Sony eventually put a Rootkit on its audio CD to stamp that out and got into real hot water with customers.....they had to stop doing that. But that rootkit "phoned home" to Sony when someone was trying to copy a Sony Audio CD....

But there could still be other companies doing the same thing and just not found out yet, which is why I do a rootkit scan at least once a week, even though I never copy CDs any more as there is enough legal to copy digital music on the internet to keep me happy.

I hope that you now understand better the basic differences between analog and digital copying, though I have, for the sake of brevity, not covered all aspects of copying fully......if you need more detail, just ask.

Re: Win XP Pro Disk

Ok, I promis to check it up for you, and if I found anything strange, then will get back and tell what and why and so on..

What I know for sure now, for example when you buy cheap empty dvd´s or cd rom´s in supermarket, the quality of those discs are so bad sometimes that maybe out of ten discs 3 disc will work, the rest can be trashed. the other thing is, let´s say you buy a brand new "Light Scribe" dvd player right now, and it works fine, and the driver and everything is looking fine. You start experimenting, and found out that something is not right. Later on you found out, the player works only with cd´s or dvd´s which were designed for that player, but even those discs are not 100% what you have expected, though the player wasn´t actually the world´s most expensive or the best quality designed player, and can not copy many of well known new fileformats, which we are working with today to make newer prorams, and you should always read the manual, before you buy a dvd player, because you will see a huge difference between what an expensive player can do, and why the cheap player can not. What happenz is, that yes in your system everything are looking fine and nothing wron when you the coying process started, but when there are files in programm, which the player can not copy are next up, those files aren´t burned as readable for your system, and the player won´t give you a warning, about what went wrong because it´s just a simple player and Windows Xp, and Windows knows that the copy is not right, but giving you a false answer on what went wrong, because programmed to give a warning, but not programmed to figure out such problems, only knows that something is wrong and you have figure out what is.So it has to do with the player at the first place, and those whom are selling these kind of dvd players will never inform you, because if they did, nobody would buy a player which can not play every fileformats, and you as professional, should not use cheap dvd player, if you know that you have to make copies of programs or whatever, the experiment will cost you much more then if bought an expensive player in a long term. Anout Nero.. maybe that, yes those softwares which are designed, they used to send out a kind of code sometimes, but only if they has detected an illegal installation, and then your dvd player can be turned to a cd player is true, and the code is hidden, you can´t found it, but it´s there. Some fileformates can indeed be made invisible for the human eye, and for the operative system, and they still working without any problems. If you know how to found that code, you can get rid of, and the system will work fine again. So there is absolutelly nothing wrong with your players, and it is not Microsoft, and not Windows, but that simple little code. When you make a new boot on such system with problems like this, and the system is kind of older, then you always must have to erase all contents, and not just make a boot, because codes like that stay on, you can not get rid of, even if you boot a 100 times, they will be reborn, but when you have a clean drive and clean cmos... the system and the dvd and all will eb very functional again, until you found Nero and install it once again... Hmmm.. sounds a bit like horror...

Ok see you soon!

One more thing... When you have an antivirus programm installed, it will change the installations in the Internet Explorer.

Click on start

Click on Internet (Blue simbol "E")

Up to thr right, you have the "Tools" menu, now click on that.

You will found a menu called: "Internet Options" click on that now.

To the right, you will found the:"Advanced" menu.

Scrool down to the following:

"Security"

Under the security, try to locate:

"Allow Active Content To Run On My computer"

"Allow Active Content To run in files on this computer"

"Allow Active Content To Run And Install On This Computer, Even If The Signature Is Invalid"

Now you have to mark these three options, and save the values, then you restart the computer and check if the installation was a success or not, and these three options are still marked or not.

A few hours later, the Antivirus programm is going to change the installation back to the original, and you have to change it back again, when you want to run a Cd or a dvd on your computer, or you want to install a programm in Windows.

what happenz when these three options are not saved as marked, that the Internet Explorer will block the dvd player in your firewall, in the Antivirus Programm, which you have installed, like Symantec for example. You should make the correct installation inside Symantec, to change it to a value, which you think is the best for your system.

About the "Good Data" stuff..

Well, an Updated Visulal Studio 2009, knows exactly, so if you are looking for a programm which can give you all informations on what is going on, install Visual Studio, and all other related MSDN library updates as well.

Me again.. Well, almost forgotten to tell you.. When Windows can not read from the disc, is probably because of two reasons. The disc is damidged, or simply dirty or fat stained on it. What you must do is, to wash that dvd well with white soap in hot water, and wash all the soap off and dry it with paper until it´s very clean on both sides and dry. Run it again, and the disc will work.

....good info for making dirty DVD/CDs readable, but ONLY if the copy is good in the first place........if the copy is badly made or it lay in the sun for an hour or two, then NO CHANCE!!!

Many people do not realise that scratching or dirtying the bottom of a CD/DVD is hardly of any consequence, but damaging the top (the side that is not read from) of either causes a total data loss of the file in that position.

Also UV is bad for most CD/DVDs...

When not in use, in the box away from ANY light!!

Since Microsoft has discontinued selling XP I don't see it as "flaming" piracy. I can see not supporting/promoting Win98SE anymore. But come on... as long as there is a good market for XP why not still make it available to the public through retail outlets? Just put a notice on the box that the product will not be supported after such-and-such a date.

Try ImgBurn.

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4124639/Win98_SE_MSDN___Plus98___Resource_Kit___Security_updates___Extra

is where you can read about it.

You can get many different versions of win 98 and MSDN, but suupporting win 98 internationally, and to sell, is no longer actual.

Nobody is making related hardwares, but sofware related can still be found. there are many programmers and developers still supporting your Win 98.

What i can recommend for you, is that you make a free account on ZDNET at first, and you subscribe on a newsletter, and they will always send informations for you into your mailbox once or twice a week about what is new with Win 98.

Related hardware with Win 98 means, that nowhere on the world we make processors today, or manufacturing graphics cards or cd-rom drivers for Win 98, but we do have floppy still, and on motherboards indeed can be connected to and used, and drivers are supported also. You still can have and use Win 98 without any problems, but you must have the computer 1985-1987 made. Some of those computer are still working and in use, but not too long until they become unfunctional.

We do have new teachnology today, but we have to respect the past, even if we have to live with the future.

Bondy,

As entertaining as this thread is, I only saw one or two posts that were probably right in regard to your problem. I would say with a degree of certainty that your problem is a dirty or scratched disc, and has nothing to do with any copy protection or Microsoft shenanigans. Try cleaning the disc, or try a different CD drive to read the disc.

Yes, some of them are entertaining

I have managed to install xp pro onto my second hdd, could I now copy the files from that to make a ISO disk?

Re: Win XP Pro Disk

The ideas behind virtual programming and computing started when we found out that the computer can process more complicated informations, if we have mixed the right kind of materials when we are manufacturing the processors, making them as little on the inside as possible so that we can place up to four processors in the same size or even smaller. graphics cards were made to fit the requirements, though if we can process informations faster, we probably can also drive applications in a 3 dimensional environment. We found out, that the computer can drive those applications in virtual, but though we must also change the fileformations if we like to drive them directly, we can reduce the processing time even more and make the system run even faster. We changed the way how the dvd player works, so that the player can read such file formations and had the system which could process these "expanded" file formats.

It was all ok, but we must must also have to fit the idea inside Windows, so that programmers can use the same technologies, and could make their programms and add 3 dimensional environments when creating them. It was only possible in "image file formats" though the "DVD" is made the way like reading pictures instead of reading files directly, but we can also store informations on a dvd which are amde in older fileformations if we change them into image formations, means that we make an image file of an entire programm, or just part of programs. Imagine that you make a photography of a file, or whatever. the dvd is almost like a projector in the cinema, and when you are watching a movie, you see running pictures. We can store these pictures on a big cd which is about 4.7 GB big, and call it DVD. We don´t call it CD because on CD there are files, but on a dvd you found millions of very little pictures and photographies, and inside those photos you found the programfiles, but not directly on the cd, so we need a program to be able to transelate these image files back to normal fileformats on older type of motherboards. We call that programm: "ISO" or "POWER ISO". ISO is exacly like "WIN RAR", but the difference is, when you open the rarfiles in ISO, what you will found is, those pictures which we have the programs files stored on. It also means, that when you have created a programm in iso file foramatted formations, you are running a kind of movie as well, in 3 dimensional environment. Windows XP is not a programm which is made in such environment, but was formatted in mormal simple ways. There are many new versions of Windows XP Professional like "XP3" or "Vista XP" so on.. are not made by Microsoft, they used image files and 3d environments and ISO dvd discs of XP, and those versions XP can be driven and booted on newer types of motherboards, but not the original XP which is made in older fileformatted ways.

-How do you know, if the XP programm that you have is ISO or not?

You simply check the size of that XP, and if that is not greater then 700 MB, is not an ISO, but if that XP is greater then 1GB means is an ISO.

You do not make ISO of the 700 mb XP, because you don´t have to. There is no 3d environment there, and the computer can read all the files without any DVD programm. If you have a computer without a dvd player and the programm which can read ISO files, you will not be able to run, upgrade boot or or drive such dvd which is containes those image files. If you are looking for an XP in ISO formations, you have to look for that on torrent sites, but not on Microsoft. Yes Microsoft use the ISO format and expanding XP to "Vista" is only because they like to use the 3d environment in creating their own Operative System that way, doesn´t mean they owe the technologie which is related with.

But if you still want to make an ISO of your 700 mb XP, you can.

For example, you install a triel version of the programm called "Nero Burning Room" or simply "Nero 9"

You put an empy dvd disc in your dvd player.

You load the exrated filed without the folder (I mean without the first folder of that XP) only the program files you load) because if you copy the folder on the dvd, you will have an image file of the folder and not the programm, but if you copy the program files only, your computer will understand that there is a programm on that movie, and will run it for you, even can boot it from dose.

You install the speed in Nero, how fast the images should be transported. Around 2X or 6X, but not 16X or faster, but as slow as possible, though the slower you burn image files the better quality you will have, and your computer can later read those pictures faster.

When you are done, the burning room will tell you, if the copy is success or not, and if it say that everything went well, you will have an image movie on that DVD which is no longer empty, and whatever you wanted to copy there on hat DVD is on it, and you can check it.

This how very simple it works.
