Color or light

03/21/2009 8:13 AM

Hello,

I heard something like below:

Object in the world absorbs all the color transmitted by light/rainbow, but it reflects only one color that is the color of this object .Is it correct ???If so, how is it?

Yes it is correct. I understand the science of it but can not easily put it into words. Sorry.

Should we go to electrons ?

When an incident electromagnetic wave falls on an atom, it absorbs it and if the energy is sufficient, goes to the next excited state (and there by storing the energy in forms of the heat energy) However if the incident em wave energy is lesser than the "quanta" required by the electron, then it just takes it and vibrates to give it back.

This given back energy may be reflected or progressively allowed to pass through the object (transparent/transluscent)

Thus you can see that the objects (atoms of) may absorb the lights selectively, And the rest of the light (unabsorbed) will seem to be the colour of the object.

Thus if the object absorbs all the colours except blue, it will look blue to us.

(as per long old grey memories, so check it up)

That was exactly what I would have said. I just didn't know that that was how it actually occurred.

Ok, fine, I wouldn't have said that at all. Too many expensive words. Atom, quanta, electron...HUH?!

After all, I'm just a poor, lonely alien and you're the great and powerful Gremlin!

We too work alone. I have tried and this do not work well, I do some modification and my cousin comes over and does his.

And in the end you see the plane not only flying, but reaching its destination .

I have banished all of them from my workspot.
