Counter Weight for crude oil storage tank

03/21/2009 9:07 AM

Dear all

Does any body know the application of the Counter weight for crude oil storage tank?

The Storage Tank which will be constructed is 84,6 m diameter and 15,5 m height.

Thank you

Best regard

Two things come to mind:

  1. They are referring to the counterweight installed in some types of rim seals for floating roofs:

OR

2. It is reference to the counterbalancing weight of the foundation (conrete, rimwalls, etc..) to resist uplift of the tank from wind and seismic moments.

Thanks for replying to comment my question.

For item no 1, it's clearly understood.

For item no.2 :

a. Is it some like anchoring bolt?

b. Or, is it concrete which is placed at inner side of the tank?

c. For calculating the weight of the concrete : the tank in the full of crude oil or the the tank in empty condition?

d. Please give me suggestion where the counterbalancing concrete will be placed (in drawing scetch).

Thank you

a. Yes, many tanks are anchored with anchor bolts to prevent against overturning.

b. No, concrete is not placed inside the tank. And generally speaking the concrete foundation is due to inadequate soil conditions and is just used for helping prevent overturning when pressure, wind, and seismic conditions exist; or a concrete ringwall is specifically added for overturn protection. See below pictures for foundation examples, respectively concrete ringwall, crushed stone ringwall, and concrete slab:

c. To prevent against overturning you need look at many different loading combinations - but the worst case for wind is with the tank empty, and with seismic it is when there is product sloshing inside. The calculations are a little bit involved - I would suggest you look to API 650, EN 14015, .......

d. It should be evident from above examples.

Dear friends,

For a tank of 84.6m diameter and 15m height, there shall not be requirement of concrete ring wall foundation as there wo'nt be any anchorage requirement even with high seismic or wind loads.
