can any one advise how to test a 3 core 11KV XLPE CABLE. What are the checks to be done. How it should be done. When it should be done before laying, after laying.

Use Insulation tester ie Megger of 1000 Volt.

Check insulation resistance between R - Y , R - B , B- Y, R - G , Y - G , Y - G,

Value should be more then 200 MEGA OHM.

Repeate this test after laying to ensure

Hi shafeeq,

first of all, if you are not competent to conduct a test *and* issue a test report, DO NOT DO IT. get somebody who can do this professionally, even if it means hiring a 3rd party. this would also be an opportunity for you to learn the method.

but, if there is no choice but for you to test this, do the following:

  1. get in touch with the XLPE vendor. I'm sure they will be more than happy to teach you how to do the test properly.
  2. obtain the official test certificate for the cable from the vendor. they should supply it with your purchase of the item.
  3. as much as possible, conduct the test in vendor's presence after laying.
  4. document the steps in your test and the results. sign the report, with a witness (your superior, or, better, the end-user). this way, you'll be safe from future questions if something goes wrong in the future.

HTH!

Hi shafeeq,

the essence of my reply is really for you to be *on the safe side* in this matter. the megger tester is surely usable for electrical testing, but then again, you didn't say what test you want to do on the cable. is it for electrical, mechanical or thermal property?

you haven't told me what your role here is (stores personnel or maintenance), but it sounds that you're new in the maintenance team. if so, do any or all of the following:

  • get advise from the old-timers who've been installing these cables, and request them to test it. don't feign knowledge where there is not, because that is dangerous;
  • contact the manufacturer and ask them how to do it;
  • contact the vendor and ask them how to do it;
  • read the material's manual, too.

again, stay on the safe side and let the real experts do it, and learn from them. next time, you should be able to do it yourself already.
