report on global warming

03/22/2009 3:34 PM

Hi everybody,

I'm a first year electrical engineering student and i'm writing a report on global warming, i just want know from all electrical engineers out there, what are you guys as engineers doing about the climate crisis of global warming at your workplace...any ideas at your workplace to reduce CO2 emissions regarding elecrical engineering. It would be much appreciated if i could get a few responses back,so i could compare the actions taking place about global warming. Thanks

Hi dear,

Basically CO2 emission can be reduced by energy conservation measures in any industries such as

1. Installing VFDs for motors. (Of course for higher HP motors)

2. Optimising the operation of fans and pumps.

3. Replacing incandesent lamp with CFLs. & installing lighting enrgy savers.

4. Installing energy efficient motors, transformers and compressors.

Some of the newer large motor drives are capable of capturing energy as they are decelerated, but those applications are far and few between.

As far as the workplace opportunities go, they are usually limited to projects that have a significant payback. But things like managing the peak loading by timing the use of large pieces of equipment so they are not all demanding power at the same time, is a popular project.

Installing skylights is also popular, provided you can find a roofer that knows how to make it waterproof (leak proof). But Solar Cell installations are becoming more popular as prices continue to drop. And wind mill towers are becoming very significant. But one of the most compact and daring systems I have seen comes from capturing the flow of water into and out of large tidal basins. Capturing energy from tidal basins is likely to become big business because it is more available, dependable and predictable than solar or wind. And tides come from the orbit of the Moon, so I think it ought to be called Moon Power!
