Perchloric Fume Hood with Exhaust System

03/23/2009 12:03 PM

Dear Sir,

I have few questions about the perchloric exhaust system need expert to help.

The questions are

1) Is there any problem if centrifugal fan is used for this application?

2) Is there any problem if the inlet cone of the centrifugal fan is made of fiberglass but other parts are stainless steel 316?

3) Is there any reason why the fan for this application shall be lubricated with fluorocarbon grease?

4) What is the recommended duration required to wash the fan & duct work?

Thanks & regards

Choo

Perchlorates are extremely powerful oxidants, hence the use of non-flammable fluorocarbon grease. Using flammable hydrocarbon grease can result in an explosion.

Is there any reason why you want to change the fan? If not, best leave it as it is: as least the manufacturer will be liable for it. Tamper with the design, and you'll be liable for whatever consequences may arise as a result.

if you are talking about perchloroethylene you should not use a fan to exhaust fumes.

the water in the pipe that follows the perimeter of the tank about 6" from the top is all that is needed to contain the fumes. if you start using an exhaust fan you will draw fumes/product past this barrier and create problems all over the neighbourhood . . .
