ASTM E119 Hollow Metal Window Frames

03/23/2009 2:22 PM

How does the ASTM E119 code truly affect standard hollow metal door or window frames? If a window frame is in a concrete block wall that is fire rated for 2 hours, does the frame also have to be rated for two hours?

As per ASTM E119 it is rated as an assembly so yes the frame has to be rated for 2 hours. No good to put a fire rate door of two hours into a frame thats going to burn out in 5 minutes and let the door fall out.

I understand that! But does the frame have to be rated a full 120 minutes or can you use a 90 minute rated frame? I am trying to understand what ASTM E119 is trying to accomplish. There are NO SDI manufacturers that can do a true 120 minute frame. So what do I do?

For 60 and 120 min fire or heat barrier assemblies, there are a few manufacturers offering labelled assemblies, per ASTM E119. Check out VETROTECH VDS-120, for example. Hang onto your checkbook... it's gonna be a big number!

If we make the door of unburnable composite, or recicled materials, of plastic, like we have in the kitchen when we make breakfast, the burningtime would be probably 24 hours. Humans could be saved in time or coocked alive inside like the ham and eggs, but they would have chanse to be saved from the building alive maybe, or 3rd dagree burned. Metallic doors are sure heavy, but plastic doors could be made lighter weight then metal doors, and the inside temperature in the building which is about to burn down, would probably be lower then if the door was made of metall.

The idea maybe sound stupid, but could save many lifes, where for example huge forest fires are expected in the next five years to come, and even when the houses are burned down, the material could be used again, but wood is burning much faster, and ashes can not be recicled. Transporting wood is also not too cheap on long distances, plus we could save the nature as well, or at least a few big trees maybe...

ASTM is not a code. It only describes the test procedures for specific materials.

The controlling specification/code may require that materials be tested "in accordance with" ASTM E119, but E119 does not control what materials are used in construction.

And, attila2007, it is better to keep one's fingers from the keyboard and appear stupid, than to type, and remove all doubt!

I think my idea would work in practice. Plastics can be manufactured cheap you know. We can build houses of plastic, but we don´t.

I will explain why:

We can run cars on water. We can have a lamp which would not burn out for a hundred years.

You as genious, knows why we don´t have these technologies today?

Sure he can´t controll over and decide what to do next, but all it has nothing to do with my idea whatsoever. What you just said, was exactly like: "It is a stupid idea to run cars on water."

I have to remind you, that in many countries today, gas is much more expensive then milk, and you can and will not do anything about it, and will run your cars on gas, and pay for that from your pocket, lots of money you know. You wouldn´t found my idea stupid, if you lived in a forest, and you are in the middle of a forest fire, and your family is inside the house, waiting for you to be saved, and you counted, that when the fire reaches the door, in two hours the house will burn down. You are right, and I should not even think about telling these things, because nobody would ever care.

I still think anyway´s, that some people can afford plastic houses.

You should become friends with Senatorferrell.

He has a bunch of scientist friends who would be willing to help you build that house.

Let me know how you do. I'm all for making houses out of plastic, because I have a polycarbonate mine on some of my property. We also just struck a huge vein of high grade polyphenylene sulfide in the Pacific Ocean. I understand that it will not burn till the cows come home.

Good bye.
