Data Center Rack Cooling Tests

Hi there

I am completing a project which includes a 160kW UPS supplying a computer suite. The rack cabinets have integrated cooling, in the form of Liquid Cooling Packages (LCPs) for each. These packages can extract up to 30kW of heat from each cabinet. When I asked about testing these, this was met with a shrug.

I want to install approx 30kW of heating in each cabinet. Switched in say 4 stages. The load bank must fit into a rack, with internal space about 450mm wide, 600 deep and 1800 high. I want to run this for about 6 hours, so no Mickey Mouse stuff. Getting a load bank is easy, but getting it to fit has proved unresolvable.

Fingers in ears, teeth gritted into wind, feet firmly planted, I await your torrent of advice.....

BG,

Two things:-

A Loadbank will not adequately test your heat loading\heat rejection as it is a different type of heat profile and will probably damage the cabling and internals of the Rack in the process.

Secondly, the Lab testing & proof of concept testing by most of the rack designers is done with Servers, Blade Server or Disk Arrays or "By the Numbers".
This is generally based on the Air Volume (l\s) and Cooling capacity of the LCP Coils.

I had one client try 16kW of Resistive coil heaters (Mickey Mouse 8 X 2kW heaters),

The end result = Fire Alarm (No Gas Dump, Luckily), Destroyed Fibre cables, Cat6 Dead and Power Rails both needed replacing. Translates to "Don't do it this way"

If you look hard enough, you can hire enough server, SANs etc to create your load for in situ testing...This is the best, if not the cheapest way to do what you need.

Last thought, with the UPS you are installing, this is only 5-6 racks, you might want to re-think your loadings.
