Life Saving Inventions of 20th Century

06/02/2005 12:22 PM

Tuesday's story about the Johnstown Flood got me thinking about why civil disasters result in fewer casualties and deaths (not quite sure if death=casualty). What about the helicopter? How many lives have been saved in the past 50 years because of it's invention? Aside from the defibrillator, can you think of an engineering creation that has had such a positive effect on saving lives that otherwise would have been lost?

The seat belt, air bags and child safety seats have saved hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives.

Live saving.

I'm not use if it counts as an invention, but CPR has probably been the greatest lifesaver in history. If we are talking just apparatus, my award goes to jaws of life. They allow cars and buildings to be removed to get to the injured people within before they die of trauma and blood loss.

Dialysis machines, diabetes testers, asthma inhalers, epi-pens, and way too many others to list.
