make round hole square

03/26/2009 2:20 PM

It's been over 30 years since I used one, and for the life of me I can not remember what it's called.

What it is I drill a 2

1/4 inch hole,

then take this item that is ohh 8 to 12 inches long and it has every 1/4 inch or so a set of cutters, that once the unit is passed completely through the material the hole is now a 1/4 inch square hole.

What is this thing called? I am drawing a total blank on it's name, tried many Google searches on a name, but never found it.

Anyone?

(Since this is a 30 ans back story, today you have cutters with cam action/ interpolations for making almost square hole. Somewhere there is a link in CR4 for this as well as in net there is a GIF also )

The process is called broaching. You put the broach in the hole press it through and wallah .... square hole,

Another method to make a round hole square is called rotary broaching. This tool creates the square in one pass, however, as it rotates it directs all the cutting forces to one corner at time. When it reaches the bottom of the hole, 'voila', square hole.

This is a practical tool for lathes and CNC machines because the part can often be finished without removing it for a second operation. It only works on small holes under an inch in diameter.
