Cold Rolling in the Oil and Gas Industry

03/26/2009 2:29 PM

Howdy!

in the oil and gas industry after cutting threads on casing, tubing and/or pipe (2-3/8" to 30") they do what is called "cold-rolling".

it is similar to burnishing a machined surface.

where can i learn this process and obtain the tooling necessary?

Thanks!

I'm not positive but I think this may be the same as a process I learned years ago.

When threads are cut initially the top edges under magnification have a saw tooth edge.

The 'cold-rolling' process turns that edge over, reducing friction and enabling a tighter seal. That, at least, is how it was explained to me at the time. The process was performed using a second die made for that purpose. It was part of a 'Ridged' pipe threading machine.

Pipe thread tool manufacturers should be able to give more complete info.

cold rolling is done to the root of the thread with a hard wheel with the same radius as the thread this work hardens the root prolonging the thread life by reducing tool failure due to cracking.both internal and external threads can be done.the process is done in a lathe hydraulic pressure is applied, the connection is rotated and the wheel travels along the thread in pitch work hardening the root.

SECOND RESPONSE IS THE CORRECT ANSWER TO THE QUESTION,

BUT I AM STILL LOKING FOR THE TOOLING, AND WHAT ABOUT THE PRESSURES and sizes of dies??

thank you very much

You may want to check Standard DS-1(R) out.
