New plants, New technology - Nuclear Power is coming back

06/02/2005 2:48 PM

The Christian Science Monitor has an interesting article about the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the push towards a new generation of nuclear power plants. Unlike the 104 "custom" reactors spread throughout the US, the new reactors fit into a three standardized designs; which should make them cheaper to build and easier to train operators to use. That said, many of the existing problems with nuclear power (public concerns over safety, nuclear-waste disposal, defending plants against terrorism and nuclear proliferation) will still exist even if these new reactors are built.

Maturity

I think that as the technology becomes more mature, and safer, people will become more comfortable with nuclear energy.
Also people are a LOT more technically savvy and there is less "black magic" involved in how power is produced.

Vegas

The problem of nuclear waste is troublesome. After all, Yucca Mountain is only 100 miles from the fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States (Las Vegas).

The question is toxic waste better or worse than other pollution we put in the environment? At least we can keep track of toxic waste and store it "safely". It is concentrated pollution, more deadly but avoidable if taken care of properly.

Plays nicely into the ending of Stephen King's "The Stand"...

I think Trashcan Man had a bomb not a bunch of toxic waste. Besides it's not like toxic waste is going to explode. The cute thing is that they took years to make the warning signs. The half-life of that stuff is @10,000 years. No language has survived that long and few materials are that durable.

No, it won't explode, but could seep into aquifers. Some of the cracks in the Yucca geological formation extend from the planned storage area all the way to the water table.

Like I said, there has to be alot of care used in the storage of this stuff, but I wouldn't want to drink the water down wind from a coal burning plant either. None of these solutions are all that great, we just have to figure out which monsters under the bed we can live with (or die slower from.)
