How to Design a Guyed Tower

03/31/2009 6:26 AM

DEAR GURUS,

Can somebody help? I am faced with the design of a 140m high guyed tower. What are the forces one has to consider in the design of the guy wires, the main legs, the horizontal and diagonal members of the angle steel sections?

The tower is square in plan and the guy wires (at the four corners) at 4 levels; 30m, 60m, 90m and 120m plus a 20m free end.

I have calculated the surface areas of all the antennae and the steel members. Is it just the matter of finding the component of the wind forces in the various wires and dividing by the strengths of the cables?

No moment at the base. Is foundation designed with only the axial load? We handle normally self supporting towers but do not have sufficient experience in handling guyed towers.

What about seismic forces?

PWSlck,

Actually where the tower is going to be erected is not known to have incidence of seismic activities but you can include it for future sake. It is a telecom. tower.

thanks

Dear Guest what you expect is a free design of a quite complex system. I think that it would be better to hire the services of some body. as one of us recommended some time ago "do not for an important job (and it seames to be one) ever think to use counsels from a forum even as CR4".

You could be better served by a consulting person who will also take a responsibility for what is said or given to you.

If you make this saving it could cost at the end much more.

nich name,

There will by all means be a consultant on the tower but it is also as important for us to be able to check through our own calculations and be satisfied with what is offered us. It is not enough to get somebody taking responsibility but, more importantly, to be convinced of a proposal.

There is a lot of useful information on this site. Although they are advertising a computer program, they include some useful hand verifications.
