Instrumentation in hazard area

04/05/2009 9:23 AM

Is there is any roles or standard guides to select the type of the instrument protection method (IS.Ex d, Ex 'e' or other protection method) according to hazard area classification?

regards

I am not well versed with Divn Classfn ,

However For Zonal Classfication You may follow the following ,

For Zone 0 -Only Intrnsically safe ( Ex-ia) protection

For Zone 1 Exd ( Explosion Proof or Ex-ia)

can be used.

IEC 60079 & NEC Article 70 Section 505, Provides guidelines for selection of protection of Instruments

Hi there,

There are standards that govern this. You will need to start with the standards that govern your country. In South Africa this is SANS, they use the same standards as IEC. You can also look at ISA as a starting point.

If you understand the basics i.e. < x Joules / Watts per loop - you are on your way.

Regards,

Craig

Be aware that selection of equipment for hazardous areas requires some training, and is not a topic for the uninitiated.
