Wanted: 302 Stainless Steel Round Bar

I'm a 3rd year mechanical engineering student and i am looking for AUD$/kg for grade 302 stainless steel round bar of diameter 50. Any help as to where i can find this information?

Being a student, your requirement is bound to be very low. No company is going to entertain that quantity.

Your best option is going to be

a) materrial supplier to your college. institute

b) Local dealers for SS bars/ Rods

c) Any industry nearby who deals in SS products- May be fasteners, Springs, Valves etc. Don't have much experience with this alloy.

Have a look in Yellow Pages locally for "steel stockholders", then pay a visit. Take some Wonga, and exchange it for the stuff that is wanted.

Let us know where you are in Aus and I'll see where we would source it.

Probably end up being "bluescope" or "metalmart", but I might know a local source close to you.

The other option is that most local marine suppliers/fitters will cary SS materials for their own workshops and will probably sell you a portion at cost plus a cutting fee.

How much do you need?

price is ~US $1.16per pound; per amm publication. you can convert currency and to kilograms.

Unfortunately US prices are usually a lot cheaper than AUS prices,

I believe that they call this "economy of scale."

The AMM prices are reported commercial quantity transaction prices, but I supplied them as illustrative for purposes of preparing a quotation.

Students and hobbyists may find it hard to obtain small quantities of metal bar etc. I am in Melbourne and regularly visit a particular scrap metal merchant to see if he has useful materials for my model engineeering hobby. they have 50 mm bar at $4 per kgm

My only suggestion is and i don't know yr location,but vist yr ship yard they must hav one old dog that is for scrap(free and time)
