Paleolithic Park - Studying Neanderthal DNA

11/16/2006 2:36 PM

Researchers are studying the DNA of Homo Neanderthalensis (Neanderthals) to better understand the evolutionary steps which produced our species Homo Sapiens Sapiens (Modern Man).

The DNA is being taken from bone fragments found in caves in Europe. Genetic material from the bone has let researchers identify more than a million building blocks of Neanderthal DNA so far, and it should be enough to derive most of the creature's 3.3 billion blocks within the next two years, said researcher Svante Paabo.

Here is the link to the story. The research should add some insight into the debate as to whether Neanderthals were killed off by early Homo Sapien Sapiens, or if interbreeding took place between the two species.

Neither. My old boss is still alive.

"to better understand the evolutionary steps" is, of course, so much bunk.

What they will have evidence of is:
- how much of the genome of the sample matches significantly with other DNA samples, and
- which genes appear to be different from other human samples,

- to the accuracy they can muster from a tiny chunk off of a chunk of a bone out of a box of other bones from a hole in the back of a cave of unknown contaminants over thousands of years.

Hmmm. Sounds about right for an "evolutionists" idea of a valid study. Throw 'em some tax money, they'll come up with a new theory.

Evolution is real. There is a ton of information behind it. Your doing yourself a terrible diservice and you mistakenly beieve you're engaging in debate, when in fact you are burying yourself in denial. There is no doubt here. No inconclusive evidence. Evolution is as much fact as anything can be.

Hi Roger, thanks for saying what I was thinking.

I had to chauffer a couple of colleagues from the States a few months ago, and I was quite surprised to find they were both creationists. As we spent 6 hours in the car, there was plenty of time to have a blazing row! I'm not an expert on these matters, but I could certainly counter the arguments that were put forth to justify the ongoing attempts to ban the teaching of evolution in schools.

I couldn't believe the fact that Darwin was not awarded a Noble prize is used against evolution. Is it unknown in certain parts of the world that you cannot get a Noble posthumously?

And that Darwin died long before there was such a thing?

P.S. Just to wind me up, a friend of mine 'e' mailed me a link to a video clip where some very serious people where trying to justify creationism as a fact due to the way a banana fits the human hand so well. America has the reputation of having an excellent education system, what's gone wrong?

OK, rant over, sorry to take your time!

Re your glass quote: actually all you have is a glass that is twice as big as is needed.

Re your answer about evolution, all you are demonstrating is that evolution might not have advanced all of those now on earth.
