Mechanical Engineering Project, Need A Creative Mind!! Please Help!!

04/09/2009 7:22 PM

Ok well I think I've figured out what I am going to do for my project, but I just need a little help to finish it off.

So the idea is that there is a semicircle fountain/pond and we have to build an object that will get an orange from one side of the fountain to the other. You cannot just go straight through the center of the fountain however because there is an inside barrier that would stop you (think of it like a track). The challenge is to get the orange there in the quickest time possible. You also cannot use remote controls, so it would definitely make it very hard to control when going around the semicircle.

Now, my idea is to have a sturdy platform with a steel plate at the bottom (acting as an anchor) so that it will just stay in place at the beginning of the race. Then I will have a crossbow aimed towards the other side of the fountain (45 degree angle) that will shoot the orange into the water residing on the opposite side of the fountain.

Now, the only problem is that I am not allowed to technically set it off for the shoot once the race starts. So I am going to have to time it somehow to shoot off in a few seconds. I thought maybe of lighting a string as a fuse and maybe finding a way to work like that??

Idk, I'm kinda stumped at this point, anybody have any ideas please?!

Think of it like a track? Think of it like a wall?

0 degrees? 45? Where is the Orange?

What sort of object are we talking about?

Can't set off crossbow?

Tie string to crossbow tied in a manner to hold back the bowstring of the crowbow, and then light fire to a fuse that burns the string that holds back the bow string of the crossbow that shoot an arrow with an orange on it?

Ok well I meant think of it as if its a track like in track and field. For example, if you take out the straight aways on a track and your left with the end semicircle, its something like that.

And then there will be an inside barrier so that we cannot just take a boat right through the center.

Now, the object of the actual project is to move an orange from one side to another side of the pond as fast as possible. Thats why I thought that slingshotting the orange over to the other side would probably be alot faster than simply trying to make a boat go around the entire pond. (the semicircle is probably about 150 feet in diameter).

The 45 degrees was just the angle at which i was planning on shooting the orange off at. And no, theres no arrow that im shooting off, Im just using something like a crossbow or slingshot, not sure yet, and it will be modified to shoot off an orange.

And lastly, I'm not allowed to like pull back the slingshot and let it go.. I have to have it pulled back and somehow release the orange without any direct result from me touching it.

Thanks!

Dear yb10113, I gave lynlynch a GA, because either your description of the assignment is incomprehensible, or the assignment is impossible.

Possibly reposting would be a good thing.

As a Student Pilot one time my instructor simulated an engine failure by pulling the throttle on the plane when we were about 500 feet off the ground. I simply reset the throttle.

There was no further argument.

My point is slightly obscure.

What is the point of my rejoinder?

Transcendian P.S. This is a trick question, and thanks for signing up.

Your post is unintelligible. Must the orange remain in the fountain? is important thing to deliver orange from a to b passively and intact, or is it to get orange from a to b regardless?

What about a rigid parabolic wire from start over barrier to finish. Think st louis arch. Drill hole and put bushings in orange and put them around the wire. put heavy lift model rocket engine(s) on orange too, You may use fuse or electronic igniters based on rules. Or one could use a corn starch explosion in a pringles can toprovide thrust to lift orange. Or a compressed air blast, Or or, Or or.

If the orange has to be intact one can then create a carrier for it but a vehicle of similar description to transport.

Better descriptions of problem always begets better solutions.

welcome to cr4
