Using Air Plasma to Treat Plastic

04/10/2009 3:11 AM

Can somebody guide me on the efficacy of air plasma treatment to treat PP, HIPS and ABS material prior to base coating for metalization.

I am designing a base coat and a top coat line to coat plastic enclosures (caps & collars) used in perfumes & cosmetics industry. The component speed is 6 meters/min. travelling on a chain-on-edge conveyor. The current method of pre-treatment employed, that I have had opportunity to see, have been using flaming using high pressure burners. But the results that I have seen are not satisfactory due to the complex shapes of the enclosures in the market.

It is then I heard of air plasma and need your advice on whether it would be suited for my operations. I also need to know the specs that I should look for when procuring an air plasma system and where I can source it from (preferably in India, if not, then rest of the world)

There are several infinitely superior surface activation technologies to plasma.

Your issue is to increase the surface energy of the polymer from 29 Dynes or so.

A company called Fluoro-Seal, Inc. can give you up to 60 Dynes with its fluorine and magic pixie dust formula. Surface Activation Technologies can get similar results using a modified sulphination process.

Both are better than any plasma or corona treatment.

Both are US based. Doubtless you can find someone doing the same in Asia, but the key is to use a fluorine gas based method.

If you are trying to increase vapor barrier you need do nothing else than this treatment. If you are looking to improve adhesion I can assure you that although this process is not well documented in the literature, it works much better than any other process I have seen.

With Poly pro there may be some issue with the creation of low molecular weight liquids. I advise looking at several articles by Alphonsus Pocius regarding this issue.

I work as a consultant in this field and if you would like to discuss this in greater detail we can do so off line from this forum.

Cheers,

Bloefeld
