Force / Preload vs. Torque

04/10/2009 7:21 PM

If I am using a screw to push a load, how do I calculate the load I get from a given torque? I don't think it is the same formula I would use to calculate clamping force or preload in a screw, is it?

You can use same formula if you have the right ones considering the fact that the torque in an assembly depends on two friction zones:

-head or nut

- thread

In your case you have to keep the term for the thread friction and adapt the second to the way the contact on the contact surface is build up.

Good approximation can be found in "Mechanical Engineering Design" , Shigley, Joseph. See section 6.5 to 6.6 Or any other engineering text.

Nook Industries has some calculators for these.

Here's another calculator that lets you select the fastner, type in the torque, and it returns the force. See the lower one on the linked page.
